The Holy Kingdom of Illian (Ill-ee-an)

Between the Thrithinglands and the eastern sea lies the land of Illian. Bounded on the west by the mighty Caphrata river and the shadowed glades of the Fellwood to the North, the Kingdom of the Chosen has remained much the same for the last 1000 years. While the history of Illian is ancient, much is obscure and vague due in no small part to the efforts of the historians of the holy order of Teuto. A powerful Theocracy, the kingdom is ruled by the Bouras family, a bloodline worshiped as demi-gods blessed by Teuto. The royal family rules with the iron fist of the Solar Order and the fanatic loyalty of the Teutonic priesthood. The practice of arcane magics is strictly forbidden as heresy, and druidism and other ‘wild magics’ are reviled. This may, in-part, be due to the perpetual war with the encroaching Fellwood in the north of the kingdom. Each year the wild forest grows, swallowing fields and villages beneath its shadowed boughs. The Chosen drive it back with axe and torch – an act the Sylvan elves and wild folk do not appreciate. Their struggle seems eternal and bitterness runs deep on both sides. Queen Nyrti sits upon the Sun Throne and her four children carry out her divine will. There are rumors that her eldest, crown prince Rishi, has declared a crusade and leads a host of the Chosen against Umra’s forces in the Thrithinglands.

Regions

The land is governed by many counties and baronies, however the land is often described as having four regions. The Coast, where trade brings coin and culture and the rich bounty of the sea. The plain, where the floods of the Caphrata bring water and silt to feed the fields. And the North, where the shadow of the Fellwood looms everpresent.

Government

A Theocracy, the kingdom is ruled by Queen Nyrti and the royal family, descendants of the Blessed Prophet and hero Bouras. The Solar Order are charged with the defense of kingdom from enemies without - while the fanatic Teutonic priesthood safeguard the spiritual well-being of Nyrti’s subjects. Religion The Holy Kingdom of Illian strictly worships Teuto, god of the Sun. Worshippers of other religions are welcome to visit – but may stay for no longer than 8 days. It is taught that only those chosen by Bouras may live in the land of Illian and that upon the 8th day in the Kingdom the heretics must be banished and penitent must be tested. The teachings of Bouras draw heavily upon astrological symbolism and all citizens are assigned to castes at birth. There are 7 holy castes and 1 penitent caste – detailed below.

Races

Though primarily human, there some halflings, gnomes and even dwarves who have made Illian their home. Elves, Orcs, Goliaths, Fae and other races are hated universally and outlawed.
