Desperate to perserve their dwindling power, the Old Gods unite to challenge the new ordering of the cosmos and destroy the Overgod. After eons of warfare, they are defeated by the servitors of the Architects.

The War of Ages, a struggle between the forces of the New and Old orders, the Old Gods and their Chalchuilhue and other servitors pitted against the Aboleths. The war rages for eons. War, though, is perhaps an inaccurate term. This period is not a single war, but a series of clashes and evolutionary arms-races between the different factions to determine who will have complete control of the New World. This period sees great development, particularly amongst the aboleths, who during this time develop their abilities of mental manipulation. Eventually, the Architects tire of the War of Ages, and grant the aboleths the power to not just create new forms, but dominion over the flesh and mind of that which already exists. Great masses of the Chalchuilhue are remade in more humanoid images to serve the aboleths, and the first of the Kuo-Toa and illithids emerge from vats of primordial ooze deep beneath the seas. The Old Gods are snuffed out, and those servitors who remain loyal to them are forced into hiding for ages.
