Following the defeat of Imperial forces at the disastrous Battle of Tabria against the forces of several warlord factions, the previous commander of the region is relieved of duty by the Emperor, and Aureli Maxem is sent to replace him.

Following the defeat of Imperial forces at the disastrous Battle of Tabria against the forces of several warlord factions, the previous commander of the region is relieved of duty by the Emperor, and Aureli Maxem is sent to replace him. Aureli Maxem was a highly-skilled general who cut his teeth on the war with Qikuo, and had gained valuable insight into managing wartorn regions from his dealings with the Lamia tribes that dwelled in the mountains. Additionally, while ambitious, it was thought that his blood ties to the emperor (his second cousin) would ensure his loyalty.
