The Flame of Justice

The Flame of Justice is a holy order devoted to the god Deyallor. Based mostly within the Aurean Empire, the order is committed to the protection of civilization and the destruction of fiends, undead, and heretics. The largest holy order remaining in the empire, it has thousands of members, branches in most major cities, and extensive resources at its disposal.

History

Its origins largely mysterious, the Flame of Justice likely originated in The Rift in the 4th millenia, where members were reported battling the many small cults that then existed in the region. It would spread from there, becoming a very large and sophisticated organization spread across the empire and beyond. After the rise of the lich emperor Vollinan the Undying, the order went into hiding for centuries, at times barely suviving. It was eventually involved in his overthrow, during which the order's leaders pledged allegiance to the new emperor Tiberius XVII.   After having spent centuries operating from the shadows, the Flame of Justice expanded rapidly during The Purge, reaching the greatest extent in size and power as it took a central role hunting necromancers loyal to the former emperor. The order would continue to to take part in the Purge as it became ever more expansive and violent, and become closely tied to the imperial government. When the excesses of the Purge eventually led to the collapse of the empire, the order split over debates on the empire's divine conections and the importance of loyalty too it. A radical splinter group called The Flame of Purity, who believe the empire is the manifestation of Deyallor's will and see worship of gods outside The Divine Five as heresy, would break off, though the two orders are now largely allies.
