Almost every aspect of the life and culture of the Elves relies on magic, so those who cannot use magic are usually unable to take part in most jobs and roles in society. Despite what the name might imply, an affected Elf is still bound to the Oath, as all Elves are, and is expected to take part in the Binding ceremony. Since they are unable to officially graduate from the Arcane Academy, some Elves consider the Binding of an Unbound Elf to be illegitimate, since the two are so closely associated. The sentiment is often that, through this rite of passage, the Unbound Elf is receiving recognition for an unearned achievement.
