The Dragon Wars was a civil war between a clan of the Kromnar, the Skyguard, when a third of the clan broke off calling themselves the Warsworn, and waged battle on their own. The war lasted for 400 years, nearly scorching half the known world and all life. It was the only known war where dragons fought dragons and riders fought riders alike in a battle to the death. At its end, the entirety of the kromnar and the dragon race was left on the brink of extinction. Since then the kromnar and the dragons have never fully recovered.
The Conflict
Prelude
During its time none could truly say why the Dragon Wars began, some said that it was an internal power struggle and others said that it was about dominion over the world itself. That the kromnar's warlike nature finally showed itself and they could not help but fight each other on impulse. All of this is wrong, and any who believe it are fools. Many have forgotten but there are few that remember how the war began, but it was not until a hundred years after its conclusion that its cause was discovered.
The Dragon Wars began when the son of Prince Tyrias Pyrian, by the name Loden Pyrian, was sent on a mission to aid in the war between the Outland kingdoms of Reveria and Khemet. The king of Reveria, Alaran the V, was so terrified of the host of desert warriors that he hid with his forces behind the high walls of his keep leaving his people to fend for themselves. Loden came with his dragon Arathion and a small force to aid in Reveria's defense.
In the end, Loden and his dragon Arathion turned the tide and saved all of Reveria. Soon afterward, stories were told of the boy prince and his dragon saving the kingdom. Rumors began to spread of how the king Alaran was useless and cowardly, what good is a king if he cannot protect his own kingdom? Unfortunately, the king grew jealous of Loden's popularity, he had the prince's son assassinated and his dragon killed. Alaran had made it seem like the Kromori sought vengeance but the kromnar were not fooled. Loden's father, Prince Tyrias demanded retribution but there was no proof, the king of Reveria had covered his tracks well. So Prince Tyrias stomached his vengeance to seven years until he could bare it no more, he and those who sided with him laid siege to the kingdom of Reveria and turned it to ash while the prince had the cowardly king and all his wives and children killed with his bare hands. When Tyrias' older brother Ulaan was horrified and ordered that his brother be brought before their father to answer for his crimes. Tyrias refused and sought vengeance upon all of the Protectorate and their allies for the loss of his son. Thus, the war to shape the land had now begun.
In the beginning, the Dragon Wars started in Azgyrath on the continent of Cryos, and then soon spread out to all of Oarus alike. No village, no town, no city, no kingdom was safe from the war. Fire reigned from the skies while ash darkened clouds and choked the air. Though the wars mostly took place in the air and on land, the ocean was no different and also paid the price. As the dragons fought in the skies, drakes shook the earth in their fight with one another, and leviathans turned the waters to blood as they did battle. Cities either turned to ash, were buried beneath the earth, or were swallowed up by the sea.
In the end of the Warsworn were defeated and driven out from Azgyrath and into the burning south. To this day nobody, not even their long old enemies the Skyguard know where they have disappeared to though many have searched for where they have gone to. From what many can tell the Warsworn have managed to settle somewhere that they can manage food and other resources for weapons.
Despite the victory of the Skyguard over their enemies, the Warsworn, the entirety of the Kromnar nearly went extinct. Many of the populations of each clan were driven to the brink and had ultimately left with no choice but to truly mix with the other races to avoid extinction. Along with the kromnar, the dragon race and many of their distant cousins like wyverns, drakes, coatyls, salamanders, basilisks, hydras, and leviathans had suffered greatly too. Adding in the hunting of dragons and their kin alike they too had nearly gone extinct. Both races share in the loss of life due to the continuing skirmishes between the Skyguard and the Warsworn and have remained nearing the brink of being completely wiped out. To this day the kromnar have split off into two warring factions, the Clans and the New Dominion formerly known as the Warsworn, and continue to fight each other in small skirmishes once every few decades.
