Nighthold Settlement in Oabos | World Anvil

Nighthold

Deep in the southernmost reaches of Oabos, where the light of their star never touches is the ancient city of dragons: Nighthold. This city was founded long before the Children of Radiance ever came to this world. Now it stands as the capital of the night lands, and the last bastion of true resistance against the Order of the Discerning Gaze.

The city itself sits within a sunken forest deep in the mountains. Since the light of their star does not reach this far south, the forest is sustained on core light and grows under the mountain. The forest that surrounds Nighthold thrives under a tall mountain range. The valleys between the mountains open cracks in the ceiling of the subterranean forest, to let the night sky shine through the trees in places. The forest itself is lit by the trees and grasses. The towering tress give off a faint glow on the underside of their leaves. The leafy plants on the forest floor grow thick and tall, and give off a steady light stronger than the light of the trees. The brightest light in the forest comes from blue-white flowers dotted throughout.

The city itself is grown stone homes, tucked in amongst the trees. There are homes of all shapes and sizes spread along decorative streets and paths. In the center of the city, the citadel rises above the forest and into the mountains above. The Citadel appears to be grown out of the dark stone of the mountain and forming into the broader lines of the citadel.

At ground levels, the halls of the citadel are designed for average humanoids but with very tall ceilings. At the highest levels, the halls are built to house the Eldyr in their true forms. In the days before the Children of Radiance built their airships, Eldyr could be seen flying in and out of the citadel all day. Now only a council of the four oldest Eldyr remain in the citadel, and few from outside make the journey to Nighthold.
