Coal Material in Oabos | World Anvil

Coal

While the spires sit in the perpetual light of the Radiant Disk and use prismem amplification to generate power from the light itself, below the fog line is a whole different world. The Fog Zone of Chronwhorl is submerged in a dense fog of its own making. Clean energy is expensive. For those living down here resources are far more scarce.

The power source down here is coal. Coal is a common enough material to find in the mountainous regions of Oabos, and is shipped into the city along with the prismem that companies mine. While coal is considered of little use to these companies, its common nature makes it a good sale item within the Fog Zone and some of the closer towns.

While its energy production is nowhere near a simple prismem amplifier with a beam of light, it produces enough energy for the common folk down in the streets. The coal can be purchased on an individual basis, but most of it is bought up by energy companies who use it in steam generators. It is these steam generators that produce much of the fog in the lower city. The other contributor to the fog is the heat differential between the steam generators on the bottom of the city and the bitter cold emanating from the crater blow the city and chilling the streets.

Sources

The vast majority of all coal shipped into the city comes from two subsidiary mining companies of the Academia Spire. The Mountain Architects and Premium Prismem Mining both bring in a great deal of coal in their excess materials when mining Prismem. The sale to the lower city serves to pad the bottom line of both companies, but has very little overall impact on them. The spire has often discussed taxing this sale, but each time decides to leave it as an incentive for the companies to continue shipping in the coal.

I like how there is a difference in class between the areas. The fog zone is of its own making because clean energy is expensive. Great job!   PS. There is a typo when introducing steam generators. It says stem generators.

Thanks for the feedback... and the typo catch!

It is truly amazing how you managed to take such a normally blasé material from irl, like coal, and add a spin on it that makes it unique to your world.
