Torwall Ignus

Origin

Born and raised in the repressive religious community of Antler-Upon-Byne, two days' journey south of Dartwright in Tenthun, Torwall Ignus was always a little too colourful for his surroundings. His lust for adventure got him into some trouble, and after one particular near-death adventure he gained the attention of a powerful patron that promised to save his life and grant him supernatural power... if he could secure an artifact from the mortal realm. Just a little trinket, really. The curiosity alone would have been sufficient for young Torwall to agree, and before long he had gained strength as a formidable warlock.   His adventuring brought him to piracy, and ultimately into chains in the brig of one Captain Gavinus Carey. After a month at sea cursing his name with increasingly inventive rigour, Torwall was forced to admit to himself that Captain Gav was a much better pirate than he. He began to watch and learn, and in the end offered to join his crew rather than returning to the Brigand Fleet out of Tenthun, who would ever thereafter brand him a flagswap, marked for death.

Debt to Gavinus

Something happened after four years at sea together; something neither man ever spoke about publicly. It would be clear to future members of the crew, though, that Torwall was somehow in some debt to Gavinus and resented him for it. Nevertheless, he served admirably as the man's First Mate for another 25 years before Gavinus' retirement.

Last Known Whereabouts

Gavinus sold his flagship, the Mercy, to Torwall upon his retirement. Despite naval tradition and any enmity that might have existed between the two men, Torwall chose to keep the ship's name and was last seen by Gavinus and Beulah Garland the morning after their wedding ceremony. He bid them, and Beulah in particular, a very fond farewell and made a promise to keep in touch that he sincerely meant at the time.
