A minor landmark in the
Atrium, the Stygian Well has been dry and ruined for millennia. In the Spring Age, when the Atrium was still reputedly beautiful and the well was flowing, legend has it that the water of the Well was drawn up from the River Styx. Its amnesic properties were said to be so powerful that the water could wash away the memory from a living body so completely that anybody -- mortal, god or demigod -- who would drink it would return to the Prime Material plane as a newborn infant, their very cells and souls incapable of remembering what they had once been.
Despite having fallen into disrepair and inutility, the title of Lord of the Stygian Well is still an honorific recognized among the Shinigami. While it carries some reasonable degree of prestige, it connotes no actual power nor does it seem to imply "constituency" (see
Potentates of Hell, "Language and Culture").
