Sanctuary

A small, rough-built stone shack found somewhere in the Daïdänt mountains, the Sanctuary was built by the bandit leader Gwynfor 'Good Gwyn' Maddock, in 5.712.   Maddock was widely considered to be a gentleman with a strong moral code, and a poor kind of bandit. He built the structure that became Sanctuary on the edge of one of the stable thin places, as a getaway from company man-hunters. He didn't hold with the actions of some of the more brutal bandits with whom he shared the Daïdänt, and enchanted the building so that it would only appear to hose who shared his principles - a refusal to hurt children and noncombatants, and a willingness to share his loot evenly.   The Sanctuary is slippery, even to those who can see it. Like its creator, it's best approched obliquely, shifts out of view when observed directly, and disappears entirely when studied. Nobody but Maddock has ever seen all four faces.   Internally, the building is wood-floored with a stone fireplace. There are a few wooden chairs and a table, and a cupboard which is filled with dried or tinned food that previous travellers have left for the next visitor. As with all thin places, iron cannot be taken near it, becoming unbearably heavy as the bearer approaches the structure.   In recent years, mercenary teams have learned about the building and now employ scouts (sometimnes using children) to find it and report back. With no back exit to the building, it becomes a trap. Since then, visitors have taken up floorboards and begun to tunnel out of the Sanctuary and into the thin place it stands over - preferring the danger of the unReal to the very known threat waiting forthem outside.
