Kolokolou ocean
The Kolokolou ocean is a large body of water south of Aeho'ai and east of Erwā. It is the source of the storms that batter Aeho'ai during the hurricane season, giving it its legendary status as Lāuwōkāuko - the home of the raging giant, Nēwou, whose wrath is held back by the acts of the legendary heroes of the islands.
It's easternmost extent is generally agreed to be the international date line, after which it becomes the Dasaaqeš ocean which separates Aeho'ai from Iasteron.
Though the Dasaaquš ocean offers calmer waters, the Kolokolou boasts more valuable fish species and fishing the open ocean, rather than the Kuwekuli sea, is a presigious job among the islanders, reserved for master fishers and navigators.
Volcanically active, the ocean is home to great thermal vents and underwater lava flows that are farmed by esaanla for minerals and rare shellfish. Tsunamis caused by underwater earthquakes are an infrequent but devastating occurrence, and the southernmost islands of Aeho'ai and Eastern shores of Erwā bear the scars, with historic settlements and even entire islands having been lost completely.
The andful of islands in the Kolokolou ocean are volcanic, many of which are dormant. Few have year-round inhabitants, though there are several established research stations with transient populations.
The region is well-populated by esaanla, though the exact number of residents is impossible to quantify; the species has not integrated fully with their land-dwelling counterparts and members openly delight in frustrating efforts to take an official census. Efforts to claim territories in the Kolokolou ocean have been wholly unsucessful.
