Gnomedog

Thousands of years ago the ever inventive gnomes embarked upon a canine breeding program. Using the mastiff as a parent breed, the gnomes fiddled and played with the canine's family tree to produce a breeds of dogs they bred specifically for themselves. They couldn't get a single breed to meet everyone's needs and so several breeds have emerged.   Riding Dogs
The first dogs bred by the gnomes were the mastiffs, used as riding animals. This breed is intelligent and calm, though it can fight if it's master is in danger. They are loyal and steadfast friends. Although the Mastiffs are sometimes used as Draftdogs, they were bred for riding and it is what they do best.   Draftdogs
These massive animals (to a gnome at least) are docile, hardworking dogs. They are bred for their stamina and strength. Draftdogs pull a variety of carts, plows, sledges, and in northern climes, sleds. Mainly they are used for farming equipment and for marketcarts. One never knows what they will find in a gnomish marketcart. The dogs may be pulling a load of lettuce, windup toys, tomatoes, and jewelry. "Variety is the spice of life" the gnomish saying goes.   Guarddogs (Dungeondogs)
This breed is both loyal and brave. Guarddogs can be aggressive and are trained as wardogs and outfitted in armor. Some have been trained as riding dogs for the gnomish constabulary patrols. They are often trained as riding-wardogs. These have been called Dungeondogs as they can carry supplies in saddlebags, fight when needed, and, because they are accustomed to living in the gnomish burrows, are undaunted by the dark underground places.   Hunting Gnomedogs
There are more than twelve breeds of hunting Gnomedogs. Each is bred for a specific purpose. Derived from a breed called Badgerdogs, (because they hunt badgers, not because they are a relative of badgers) these little fellows are at home in the burrows of the gnomes. Though they are still used to hunt badgers, other breeds are retrievers, setters, pointers, rabbit dogs, etc.   These animals are highly sought by gnomes, halflings, and humans. The saddles, harnesses, carts, farm equipment, and armor for the Gnomedogs brings in money for the families that create them. The gold generated leaves the gnomes more time to tinker.    The Gnomedog breeding program has been a huge success!
