The Order of Truth
Summary
The strongest and most dominant organization in the Steadfast - and possibly the Beyond. Although the Order of Truth seems like a religion, technically it's not one. The papacy has a structure like a priesthood and calls its members priests, but it's not a religion - it's a veneration of intellect, understanding, and the wonders that arise from such things: science, technology, and the numenera. The Order of Truth reveres the past and the understanding its inhabitants had of the forces of the universe. For more see: Page 222 Core BookAssets
Maintains a small army, as well as a large organization of agents, observers, clerks, scribes, and other personnel. Their headquarters lie in the city of Qi, in a complex known as the Durkhal. As well as a secret fortress called the Citadel of the Conduit that lies in a parallel dimension and can be accessed by any high-ranking Aeon Priest.
Foreign Relations
Currently engaged in a crusade against the Gaians who live beyond the Cloudcrystal Sykyfields as enemies of truth. This conflict is largely motivated by The current Amber Pope's Pope's desire to prevent internal warring among the Nine Rival Kings of the Steadfast by diverting their military resources elsewhere. After all progress is far easier during peaceful times, and if the war is happening far from their work and research in The Steadfast all the better for them.
Tenets of Faith
Respect and understanding of the numenera is the key to advancing humanity. Members of the Aeon priesthood are known as Aeon Priest and are widely respected and revered. Becoming acknowledged as an Aeon Priest requires years of formal training. Internally the Order doesn't consider itself religious however many people, known as "adherents", treat it as such. The Order does little to discourage this idea feeling that people are more likely to respect, admire, and obey the Order of Truth if they think of it as a religion, and thus quasi-religious services and ritualized forms of their teachings are not uncommon, particularly within larger settlements.
Some Aeon Priests do not answer to the papacy and consider themselves outside the Order. These unaffiliated priests dwell mainly in the Beyond, gathering in isolated, autonomous claves to continue their research and work. Despite being unaffiliated they keep the title because they respect the ideals of the priesthood, if not necessarily the direction the organization itself has taken.
