Lohjan Outlook (loh-yahn)
On the cliffs overlooking the coast near Lohjan stands a beacon house, shining its light out to the sea to warn sailors of the sharp rocks below. Also overlooking the cliffs is a ghost.
Her name was Elory Volav, and she was a young mother when she died. The stories, still told by the locals, say that her mind had suffered greatly after the birth of her son, and she was able to find no joy in her tiny infant. Her husband, the keeper of the beacon house, could not bring her out of it, despite his love for her, and he despaired. He brought an old woman from the village to the beacon house to help her, thinking that perhaps she felt overwhelmed by the responsibilities of being a new mother. Sadly, that did not work, and Elory felt more distanced from her baby and husband than ever. The only thing that brought her solace was taking long walks along the edge of the cliffs.
One night, just after moonrise, her husband saw her at the cliffside, just standing and staring out into the sea. Alarmed, he ran down the stairs of the beacon house, calling her name. When he got down to the ground level, she was nowhere to be seen. He ran to the edge of the cliff, fearing the worst, but could see nothing in the dark shadows of the cliffs; hear nothing but the pounding of the waves. Hoping he was mistaken, he went back to the house to check for her, but only the old woman was there with the sleeping baby.
The next morning, he looked over the edge of the cliffs again, afraid of what he might see, but there was nothing. The local men from the village formed two search parties, one for land and one for the sea, but no trace was ever found of a body. Years later, he told a local priest that he would see his wife sometimes, standing over the crib of their child with tears shining on her face, unable to touch the boy.
The ghostly figure of Elory has been seen by many a sailor out at night when the shoreline is too foggy for the beacon's light to penetrate, leading the boats safely to shore.
