Ploigos

A Ploigos is a type of compass used by the Elders to navigate a planet. It is a coming-of-age gift given to any worthy people who pass all the coming-of-age trials. It normally calibrates itself when it arrives on a different planet as each planet has its own magnetic field with its own version of "North".   Most people have never seen a Ploigos up close, because the Elders tend to keep their gifts to themselves. The lucky ones tend to see them when they're smashed, and occasionally, an Elder will give their Ploigos away freely.

Manufacturing process

While most Elders just give their young a tailor-made Ploigos, the more liberal families choose to let their child build the core structure themselves. Not much is known about how the compass is actually made, but it is likely that the child designs how they want their Ploigos to look like, and a blacksmith will collect the materials needed to make the compass.

Significance

The Elders value navigation as a ticket to the universe. That is why young Elders are given a Ploigos as a coming-of-age gift. It is a huge symbol of their freedom. As they value Ploigi so much, most choose to destroy theirs towards the end of their lives, as they don't believe anyone else should have access to that gift. The way they destroy it is up to them, but many Elders choose to taunt any lucky people by smashing it so it doesn't work, but is not fully broken. Those who find one spend years attempting to fix the Ploigos but to no avail. Many opportunists also sell their Ploigi to the highest bidders in the Southern Markets.
