Coronation in the Teardrop Sea Islands

There are two types of coronations within the Teardrop Sea Islands: elevated or inherited. When a landowner reaches monarch status (elevated), or the title of monarch is passed to a new heir (inherited), a coronation is held in their honour. The details vary depending on the size and wealth of the kingdom and local traditions, but some elements are universal.   The elevated coronation is the rarer of the two, but the most significant for the kingdom and tends to be a larger celebration. It is also usually attended by all other current monarchs, while inherited coronations tend to be attended only by neighbouring ones. Unless a monarch of the region has been demoted in living history (which is rare), the elevated coronation is the first coronation for the kingdom's citizens.

History

Until the Age of Acceleration, wealthy landowners could make themselves a king or queen without consent from their citizens as long as they had enough power to exert over them. The results of this move varied; accepted and celebrated in some cases, wars breaking out in others. When the Teardrop Sea Islands was formed, laws were slowly brought in to protect citizens from the negative effects of unwanted power moves by their landlords. The final part of this transition was when the land laws were passed. These determined the criteria and responsibilities for king/queenship and the rights of tennants.   In cases where a landowner's move for king/queenship was accepted, coronations had been celebrations for the newly-established kingdom as well, and some regional traditions predating the land laws survive. Interestingly, some traditions within modern coronations actually come from cases where a coronation was not welcomed by the citizens.
