The Unholy Lands
Geography
The Unholy Lands (also referred to as the Island of Darkness) is the a massive landmass or island far up over the Endless Sea and away from Nomardia in the west.
Climate
The climate of the Dark Island is considered subarctic. The weather is severe and generally unpleasant, with long winters and frequent rainfall.
During the winter, biting freezing wind roares across the moorlands, as the lack of cover causes the wind to sweep uninterrupted across the exposed terrain. The winter also brings storms to the island. These storms usually strike the island from the northwest. Storm season begins in late Onirodrago and ended in Apararoka.
Summers tend to be quite cool, wet, and misty. A near-constant chance of rain as well as heavy fog that can blanket the whole of the isle in the mornings and evenings.
Fauna & Flora
The island is covered with thick deciduous forests of aspen, birch, hickory, maple, oak, and yew. The thick undergrowth makes travel difficult unless a game trail or path is found. The plant growth is thick enough at the height of summer to block the wind, holding in the hot and humid air. During the winter, the trees droppe their leaves and the undergrowth dies, making travel much easier.
The island is also home to forests of coniferous trees. Forests of pine, cedar, and spruce have little undergrowth and the forest ground is covered in a thick layer of needles. These forests are usually located in the higher parts of the Dark Island. During the summer, cool wind sweps through the trees, and in the winter the trees act as a wind block.
The forests of the islands are home to many animals. In the deciduous forests, smaller animals such as hares and foxes made their homes. During the summer the forests are filled with insects. The coniferous forests on the other hand are home to large animals such as bears, deer, and wolves with little to no insects.
The saltwater marshes, fens, and swamps are home to swarms of insects. They spawn in the stagnant pools and were generally unpleasant, biting and stinging anyone who travels the marshes. Dangerous creatures are known to inhabit the dark waters. The freshwater lakes, rivers and streams are home to healthy populations of perch, salmon, and trout.
In the mountains, marmots, mice, and foxes live in the barren terrain. Eagles, falcons, and hawks make nests in the cliffs. Some copses of coniferous trees are found here, but usually the only plant life is hardy lichen and mosses. In some areas, vibrant wildflowers appear for a brief period during the summer.
