Astrid Hofferson
Astrid Hofferson (a.k.a. Fearless Astrid Hofferson, M'lady, Fair Viking Lady, Hoff, A, Warrior Queen, Future Daughter-in-law, The Dream Crusher, The Competitive Spirit, Lass, Feisty One)
Physical Description
General Physical Condition
Astrid is quite petite for a Viking, with mid-back length blonde hair that is styled in a braid down her back with fringes and light-blue eyes. She has a few light blue scales, the tail, wings and claws of a Deadly Nadder.
Special abilities
Dragon Riding and Training: Next to Hiccup, she's the most accomplished Rider among the teens. She works very well with Stormfly and they're usually able to synchronize their moves accurately. Astrid was able to tame a wild Monstrous Nightmare and the dragon later ended up coming to her rescue, which showed that Astrid had gained its loyalty. When she had learned the dragon call of the Deadly Nadder, Astrid was able to train a flock of Nadders to fly in a perfect formation. After being blinded, Astrid emphasized her other senses and was able to train Sleuther, a formerly untamable Triple Stryke.
Strength and Fighting: Astrid has been training since she was a child. She's an exceptionally skilled warrior. She has held her own against older and more experienced fighters. She was able to fight Dragon Hunters with nothing but a broom. She's presumably the most accomplished fighter among the teens, if not along with Hiccup. Her main weapon of choice is a double-sided axe and she is quite formidable with it. She can also alternate between knives, swords, and temporary makeshift weapons. Despite her slender form and petite size, she has also shown to have great strength to lift heavy objects and is able to even wrestle a wild dragon. She can even grab Snotlout Jorgenson by the arm and throw him into a wall.
Reflexes: Astrid is able to react very quickly to incoming danger. She dodged an arrow by kicking it away with her foot and was able to grab the darts fired at her and Hiccup with her bare hands before they hit their targets. She is also seen to be able to divert and slice arrows away from her by swinging her axe.
Speed and Acrobatics: These are undoubtedly her top physical skills. She's able to perform a variety of acrobatic feats like handsprings, cartwheels, and flips even while riding Stormfly. She was also able to swiftly dodge the attacks of a wild Deadly Nadder, and likewise with the Flightmare.
Crafting: Astrid built and designed her own hut as well as a ballista on top of her hut, displaying a few weapon making skills as well. According to Snotlout, her ballista is impossible to get past and has been shown capable of taking down whole ships. Astrid spoke of wanting to build herself an axe similar to Heather's, suggesting she has interest in even working in the forge.
Intelligence and Tactical Knowledge: Even though Hiccup stands for most of the strategies and solutions to their problems with Fishlegs Ingerman providing most of the knowledge, Astrid has proven to be quite valuable and capable in this department as well. She was the only one who wasn't fooled by Heather's act and was the one to come up with the idea of getting the Book of Dragons back. She has also always given plenty of useful advice to Hiccup throughout the years and he always takes them to heart. When Hiccup was captured by the Dragon Hunters, Astrid tricked one of the Hunters into sending an airmail so she and the other Riders could shadow the Terrible Terror and thus figure out Hiccup's whereabouts. Astrid's plans and ideas are often driven by her tactical knowledge of defense and warfare and are usually of the practical and strategic sense.
Dragon Calling: Astrid learns to call Stormfly and other Deadly Nadders by using a wolf-like howl.
Leadership: Astrid is Hiccup's second-in-command and his first and natural choice for acting-chief. She often falls into a leading role in his absence and has displayed a great eagerness to take on control and keep the other riders in check. Astrid was promoted to General of Berk. She and Hiccup will lead Berk as a pair by working together as Chief and General.
Teaching: Astrid is shown to be a strict teacher when she attempts to train a new set of Dragon Riders to be a part of her auxiliary team. She puts them under high pressure and holds them to unrealistically high expectations even if they have some prior experience. Astrid also trains Dagur. She is less harsh this time around and compliments him on his skills as well as on the way he had bonded with his dragon. Astrid advises him to use loops to keep the sun behind him for distraction and Dagur later ends up using this tactic against Heather.
Acting and Impersonating: Astrid dresses up as Heather, complete with a horn identical to Heather’s and black hair dye, to sneak into Outcast Island. She manages to fool everyone there until Alvin the Treacherous figures out she is only wearing a disguise after realizing her hair had been painted black with ink. She also manages to somewhat imitate Hiccup's voice for her own amusement. She also managed to fool Drago Bludvist into thinking Hiccup has an army of dragons ready for him.
Drawing: In Astrid sketches her own version of the outpost. Her initial style is shown to be very simplistic. Astrid's artistic skills have improved. Instead of flat or two-dimensional, the sketch of her planned attack against the hunters is shown to have more depth and touches of realism. Astrid is also seen doodling on Hiccup's map of the world. Astrid has contributed just as much to that map as Hiccup has. Ruffnut notes that Astrid has great artistic skills after seeing her drawing of Stormfly and Garffiljorg.
Enhanced Senses and Hearing: When she was blinded, her other senses like hearing became more sensitive to compensate. This made her the only rider able to hear the Triple Stryke's clicks and foresee an impending attack. It is unknown if she retains this ability after her sight returns.
Juggling and Dancing: Astrid is shown ballet dancing and juggling three large maces while balancing on one foot. Both of these skills require time and practice.
Shapeshifting: Astrid is able to turn either into her human form, her main form or into her dragon form as a full blown Deadly Nadder.
Speed: Astrid has always been a very fast dragon indeed, as was demonstrated several times during races, trick contests, and battling the Red Death. However, her speed has been increased greatly as she discovered a hidden ability of the Deadly Nadder: their speed is increased greatly when they eat chicken. Astrid is still not quite as fast as Hiccup and the effects are only temporary.
Magnesium Blast: Like all Deadly Nadders, Astrid's flame is composed of burning magnesium, which causes it to flow in torrents of orange sparkles. Her flames are hot enough to melt a sea stack in seconds. She can carry a low, burning flame in her mouth that can be used to illuminate dark places. Astrid has been shown to also have the ability to produce a more intense, concentrated magnesium blast that is bluish white, but can be sustained for a lesser time. However, Astrid, like other Deadly Nadders, prefers using her spines over her fire in a confrontation.
Strength: Astrid is exceptionally strong for a Nadder, as she can carry two humans on her back without signs of a struggle or discomfort. She can also use her talons to carry a dragon-proof cage that contains a Snow Wraith. Not only this, but she also demonstrated to be capable of carrying large boulders in her talons, with control and minimal struggle, flying as usual for a distance, then dropping them from a great height to block Whispering Death holes.
Waterspout: When flying in a spiral in a given manner, Astid can effectively create a strong upward wind current. When done above a body of water, this wind current has enough strength to lift the water like a waterspout. This ability can be very useful when confronting enemy ships.
Spine Shot: Astrid's spine shot is the most common attack to be used against enemies as she has shown to be using this skill to trap animals like sheep so they won't escape. She is also able to accurately shoot one spine. It is so accurate that she can shoot right through a previously shot spine. She was also able to use these spines as a rescue skill, to create a ladder for Hiccup in a practice exercise in case they would have to rescue Vikings from a place where dragons can't go.
Spine-Clone: While in flight, Astrid whips her tail behind her and protrudes her spines. Then, she ascends while twirling and releasing her spines in multiple directions. This is a very useful ability when surrounded by enemies from all sides.
Death Song Immunity: Due to bonding with Garf, Astrid developed an immunity to Garf’s song, and it won't affect her anymore.
Talon Snatching: Like all Deadly Nadders, Astrid has been shown to be able to grab things in her talons with precise accuracy, such as sheep and dragon flyers.
Apparel & Accessories
She now wears a side braid behind her ear and she has also stopped wearing kohl around her eyes. Astrid wears a similar blue shirt, but her Gladiator skirt has fewer spikes on it, and the brown skirt underneath is replaced with a red skirt. She still wears the same shoulder guards and skull clips (this time, with brown leather holster straps holding them in place across her upper chest) and arm wrappings. She also now has brown leather knee pads over her leggings.
