Suffering unseen since the 21st century occurs on Earth. Millions die as the infrastructure collapses and supply chains are cut. Gaios Conlaoch flees Earth's surface and rules from an orbital facility above the planet. By 2577, a re-establishment of redundant supply chains stabilizes the situation on the surface, though the quality of life of Earth's humans has plummeted.
