The Federation is ratified by a majority of global governments during the Emergency Assembly of Nations. Holdouts include the United States of America, China, France, Poland, Switzerland, South Africa, Israel, Turkey and Brazil.
In 2050, the Federation of Earth Origination Peoples was created as a means of unifying global geo-engineering efforts under a single world government. This was a period of tense political struggle as nation states and corporations slowly submitted to the new Federation.
The Federation is ratified by a majority of global governments during the Emergency Assembly of Nations. Holdouts include the United States of America, China, France, Poland, Switzerland, South Africa, Israel, Turkey and Brazil.
From 2051-2057, the Federation attempts to coerce non-member states and entities into stopping their individual geo-engineering efforts, through sanctions and threats of war. The climate is destabilized and millions die in natural disasters and crop failures. However, one by one, the remaining non-member states join the Federation without war, mostly through the clever diplomatic manuevers of Ephraim_Kouman.
Humans receive slower-than-light communication from a species known as the Halkytes. With slower-than-light communication, the Halkytes begin an agonizingly slow cultural and scientific exchange with humanity. It takes 21 years to send a message to Halkytia.
Resistance to the Federation consolidates in the Rocky Mountains. The Rocky Mountain War is the last major conflict fought on Earth and the last major resistance to the Federation.
After a full decade of sanctions, the United States of America is forced to join the Federation, the final nation to do so. They wait until after Independence Day.
With genetic engineering being largely unregulated, and the technology being cheap and accessible, thousands of human variants are created in corporate labs, medical institutions, and government projects. At the same time, public backlash grew as more and more esoteric humans variants were crafted.
Geneticists at Goa University announce the birth of the "Paripurna" child, engineered to be "perfect", free of genetic defects, and a refinement of human phisiology, to be smarter, healthier, stronger and kinder than any humans who came before. Despite initial controversy, this sets off an explosion of activity in the field of genetically engineering human variants.
Mass interest in the Paripurna child causes an explosion of interest in genetic engineering. People begin to genetically engineer their own children to be as "perfect" as the Paripurna child. Others make more exotic modifications, to make their children look like elves, fairies, cat-people, scaled dragon-people, and on and on.
A conglomerate of corporate scientists begin to secretly create human "castes", or humans specialized and created for certain social roles. The Peerage wants to create a compliant human being.
First orders come in for genetically compliant "service" humans, bereft of independent thought.
Compliant Service Variants begin to replace normal humans in workplaces, causing massive social turmoil. Riots occur in major cities.
The Popov-Sitigh bill is narrowly defeated in the Inter-Colonial Senate, which would have initiated a program to replace the humans in the current Federation military forces with "Security Variants".
To remove the threat of genetic engineering, the Federation engages in a program of destroying deviant human variants in this not-so-proud period of human history. Federation histories are curiously blank when covering these seven years of history, and when they are acknowledged, are described as the "Years of Regrettable Action".
Acknowledged by the Federation as the "Years of Regrettable Action" (or the "Years of Necessary Action" by some), the Federation took an official policy of the mass killing of divergents.
The Federation passes the first series of Caste Laws, posing strict limits on genetic engineering. This marks the end of the Golden Age of Genetic Engineering.
The Caste Compliance Division (CCD) organizes the mass killing of deviant human variants. Over time, operations become more sophisticated as the remaining human variants are driven underground.
A bright spot in the dark Years of Regrettable Action, humanity reaches Alpha Centauri using slower-than-light travel and sets up a colony. This is considered the true beginning of the Slow Expansion Period.
A CCD officer burns the Paripurna child to death publicly, with a flamethrower, on the streets of Goa. Video of the event shocks the conscience of the public. This is considered the turning point of the Years of Regrettable Action.
In response to public pressure, the CCD chief Raimond Jansson is forced to resign. The Federation quietly ends the variant purges and institutes "humane" reforms where humane variants remain in house arrest or in captivity.
Prior to the perfection of the Dark Matter Drive, humanity spread to neighboring star systems on STL drive systems. Voyages between stars took many years, which made interstellar government ineffective.
The Halkytes sends a message to humanity, reporting that their system is being invaded by an unknown alien race. With that message, they send a message to humanity, asking to send a fleet of reinforcements as soon as possible. That information sets off the 30 year Dark Matter Drive project.
The first Frog Sankari were genetically engineered to better colonize the world Gepro VI. The Frog Sankari are the first major human variant engineered since the Years of Regrettable Action, and are in accordance with Caste Law. In spite of some public outrage, there was no taste to repeat the Years of Regrettable Action.
The last communication received from the Halkytes before their chilling silence. The final reports suggest they lost the war with their enemies.
The planet Avignon is first colonized. With its oxygen-rich atmosphere, seas, and powerful magnetosphere, Avignon is the first Sparkworld other than Earth, able to hold advanced machinery with minimal insulation.
On Earth, the first Visesi "designer babies" are born, this time in accordance with Caste Law. A relaxing of attitudes toward Human variants causes a second, smaller golden age of genetic engineering.
Despite intense controversy, the Federation defines largely unmodified humans as "Junya", variants of the larger human family. Despite the classification, Junya enjoy a privileged position of being the baseline human by which other variants are judged.
The Saharan mega-city of Panterra is completed and the Federation capitol is moved from Berlin to there.
A new human variant, the Jalacara, are created. These so called "aquatic humans" are capable of spending most of their lives underwater. The bio-engineering challenge was immense and the effort it took to make them is still controversial.
With the perfection of the Dark Matter Drive, humanity advances into the stars at an extremely rapid pace. As fast as colonization is, space is still enormous, and it is estimated to take centuries until human expansion is halted by alien borders. Doing what it does best, humanity starts its conquest of every inch of its small corner of the galaxy...
The Hivers, a human variant with a eusocial social structure, is discovered near the frontiers of human space, having escaped during the Years of Regrettable Action. War immediately commences. The Hivers fight ferociously, but without Dark Matter Drives, they are doomed to fall. The Hivers are defeated and the remains scattered.
The first humans reach Nocte Ventus. This population is made up of anarchists, freebooters and scientists who explicitly are looking for a place to live out of the way of Federation expansion.
In Nocte Ventus, the human vessel Saturn accidentally encounters the Teneegk vessel Bizeegka. Knowing they had the chance to make history, they board each other's ships and meet hand-in-claw. This represents the first in-person and physical contact between humans and aliens.
A disagreement over military enrollment causes a physical brawl between senators at the ICS. Firebrand Senator Julie Comtois utters the first recorded instance of "Sparkworld" and "Sputterworld", delineating the division that would haunt the Federation for centuries to come.
Massive protests as the Federation gains control of the frontier. Planets refuse to cede control to Federation forces. The Freedom League is formed.
Defeated, the Hives retreat into Nocte Ventus and attempt to displace the people living there. The colonists use improvised military forces to defend themselves in a nearly hopeless conflict the Federation seemed distinctly disinterested in. With a great deal of effort, the colonists defeated the Hives and sent them even deeper into space.
A major Tungan fleet enters into the edges of Solspace, raiding outlying colonies. The Federation sends their entire fleet to the Battle of Herzog's Star. The Federation fleet is annihilated, and there is a real fear the Tungans might wipe out humanity completely. Instead, after a few years of destroying colonies, the Tungans return home. This is considered the closest moment humanity came to extinction.
A large scale revolt of frog sankari on planet Undine starts a protracted guerilla war with the mining companies that run the planet. The frog sankari eventually force the companies offworld.
A Tungan fleet enters Solspace for the second time. The Federation fleet responds, and fights valiantly, but is still defeated, but not without doing a great deal of damage first. Damage from Tungan raids are minimized, but outlying colonies are still at their mercy.
Absent of major internal or external threats, the Federation settles into a period of peace and prosperity, when it was truest to its ideals. It is this period that people think of when they imagine the Federation.
Rowan Cyprianus of the Populist faction is elected General Secretary. Cyprianus remains General Secretary for a staggering 70 years. Her administration is known for competence, even-handedness, and prosperity. She is considered, by some, to be the greatest statesman of all time.
On the night after her fifteenth re-election victory, the ancient 137 year-old Cyprianus slumps in her chair and dies. Eleven days of mourning are declared, one for each decade of service.
Paul Brant, Rowan Cyprianus's hand-picked successor, was elected General Secretary. Paul Brant held a stable but thoroughly monotone administration.
General Secretary Hemera Bellini's record was marred by the Tungan raid early in her administration. The raid caused a fall in confidence, and she lost her next election for General Secretary.
Regulations passed on Dark Matter Drives, restricting them because of fears that overuse would accelerate the end of the universe. Most haulers are now smugglers and spacers are still upset.
Once again, a Tungan fleet enters Federation space. Two fleets fight fiercely but are driven to a standstill. Tungan fleets are unable to raid colonies.
Anicitus Ibsen wins election on a highly anti-Tungan platform. As General Secretary, he does little but build static defenses and increase the military budget. The rest of Ibsen's administration is stable and rather dull.
Anatol Lenz is elected General Secretary, the first not to be born on Earth. Anatol Lenz is a modernizer, and upgrades the Federation's armed forces and social administrations. During his long career, Lenz becomes increasingly unpopular as he exposes corruption in the highest echelons of power. After five terms, Anatol retires and disappears mysteriously.
A crash in the gun trade as second-hand equipment from the Federation armed forces floods the market. Some of the most prestigious and skilled manufacturers go out of business.
Zurine Gualtor wins during a highly contested election. As an uncharismatic dork, Gualtor loses the interest of the public. Her 2380 election was a notable failure where she finished seventh place as an incumbent. As an administrator, she was competent but unable to assert herself.
Artemidoros ran a flashy campaign on insane ideas to catch the public's imagination. During his administration, Artemidoros funded many mega-engineering projects plagued by grift and corner cutting, including three Dyson spheres (the Federation had yet to build even one). His administration rolled back many of the reforms of Anatol Lenz and Rowan Cyprianus. He was blamed for the 2399 military defeat by Tungan raiders and lost the 2400 election.
The social structure of the Federation become ossified, and corruption seeps into the porous marrow. Serious inequalities become impossible to ignore. Cracks become apparent in the old order.
The Tungan fleet returns, but changes their tactics delivering a defeat to Federation forces. Tungan forces destroy outlying colonies, but retreat before a larger Federation fleet arrives.
Abhijit was elected promising to undo the mistakes of his predecessor. Instead, he started a program of constructing "practical" mega-carriers and battleships. Abhijit was known for his love of the navy and for wearing naval uniforms in his civilian duties.
Jochim "the Stain" Borgia, so called because he was impossible to get rid of. Despite consistent unpopularity and being openly corrupt, Jochim cleverly used resentment to win election after election. He was assassinated in 2450 after winning a ninth term.
Jochim Borgia is killed by a blaster shot from the Moon. It is considered the greatest shot in human history, for multiple reasons.
Myrrhine Wang was largely a compliant puppet of the Galtic Peerage, and promoted policies that empowered them. With an ongoing rebellion, she suffered a nervous breakdown in 2464 and committed suicide.
Mass protests erupt on a hundred Sputterworlds as they demand more representation in the ICS. The Interstellar People's Coalition (aka the First People's Interstellar) is born.
Rafael Ekmekshi was a tyrant and greatly feared as General Secretary, purging disloyal elements from the Federation administration and putting down the First Intergalactic with intense brutality. He empowered the CCD and turned them into his personal secret police. His administration coincided with the most brutal treatment of divergents since the Years of Regrettable Actions. In 2490, a public exhausted by his rule voted him out.
Federation forces blockade Coalition planets and declare them in revolt. The majority of Coalition signatories immediately give in to Federation demands. A hardcore few hold out, hoping for concessions.
The last remaining Coalition planet, Fidel III, is bombed from orbit when it is clear they won't give up their rebellion. The conscience of the Federation is shocked. General Secretary Rafeal Ekmekshi issues a brief statement that an unnacceptable number of divergents lived on Fidel III.
The Federation begins to drum up fears about divergents causing political turmoil. High-profile dissidents are rounded up as divergents. Paranoia infects solspace and the CCD are given broad powers.
Federation forces, for the first time, predict the arrival of the Tungan forces and deliver a decisive blow before the Tungans have a chance to raid. The Tungan fleet retreats before it can be annihilated. Ekmekshi is credited for being the first to be able to defeat the Tungans.
The Second Interstellar People's Coalition was founded as a lobbying group. As a requirement for joining, members had to swear loyalty to the Federation. During their twenty years of existence, the Second Interstellar accomplished little of note.
Andrina Matej is elected General Secretary as a conservative on a platform of returning to the leadership style of Rowan Cyprianus. In trying to please everyone, she disappoints them instead. Her wishy-washy handling of the rebellion of the Third Interstellar causes the rebellion to grow out of hand.
Disappointed by the lack of activity and the downright collusion of the Second Interstellar, a few members break off to form the more militant Third Interstellar.
Decades before it was expected, multiple smaller Tungan fleets enter Federation space and evade quick response fleet. They bomb strategically important worlds and raid fleet stations.
Several planets of the Third Interstellar simultaneously declare open revolt against the Federation. Federation response is brutal, involving bombing and ground invasion of the offending planets that make Fidel III seem measured by comparison. Divergent activity is used as an excuse for the disproportionate violence.
A fleet controlled by Estera Kruger changes allegiance to the Third Interstellar instead of bombing civilian cities. Later that year, Estera's flagship Pearl of Wisdom is ambushed by a Federation task force and destroyed, ending the mutiny.
Terrified by the threat of the Third Intergalactic, Rafael Ekmekshi is re-elected General Secretary. His brutal methods allow for some gains over the Third Intergalactic, but Rafael Ekmekshi dies of a heart attack in 2504.
Holger Albani is elected as a compromise candidate to General Secretary. The Albani administration is incompetent, and his various diplomatic and military gaffes unnecessarily prolong the Rebellion of the Third Intergalactic.
After the rebellion, the Federation falls under an economic recession called "the malaise". Humanity's expansion into new worlds stagnates. Stock markets plateau. Birth rates plummet. Even the elites are swept up by ennui.
In a war prolonged by bad luck, mass civil disobedience and army mutinies, the last rebelling world of the Third Interstellar surrenders.
The "forgotten administration", Debora Villanueva was a compromise candidate. Her Secretaryship was only notable in that very little was notable about it, and the Federation neither improved nor got worse.
The Federation, driven by a population desperate for reform, publicly recommits to its founding principles.
Ilargi Marton is elected General Secretary as a reformer. While his administration sees many concessions toward the Sputterworlds, none if few structural changes are made, and the Federation remains an effective plutocracy.
The Federation openly admits it was using Caste Law to persecute political dissidents, and resolves not do so ever again.
The Fourth Interstellar People's Coalition is formed, promising to neither engage in the revolutionary violence of the Third Interstellar nor the passivity of the Second Interstellar. The administration of Ilargi Marton promises to negotiate with the Fourth Interstellar.
Kasparas Maille is elected on a platform of "renewal through strength", a focus on military strength to unify Spark and Sputterworld together. He promises to end Tungan aggression. Kasparas is popular among a broad segment of the population.
To put an end to the Tungan threat, and to shake themselves from the torpor of decline and degeneracy, the Federation launches a punitive expedition into Tunganspace, which set off a period of intense warfare the Federation had yet seen.
Tungan fleets arrive to raid Solspace, but run into Federation forces preparing to invade Tungan space and are routed.
A massive Federation fleet enters Tungan space to do a punitive expedition. The Tungans are not taken by surprise, but were weakened enough by their defeat during the seventh incursion that they couldn't stop Federation forces from destroying colonies and space stations. Federation fleets do as much damage as they can before the Tungan can send the bulk of their fleet back to defend.
The Tungan Fleet counterattacks at Arzu. The Federation Fleet feigns retreat and leads the Tungan Fleet into a trap. The Tungans are wiped out in the biggest battle in Federation history, involving over three billion combatants.
The Earth Geological Council issues a report alerting the Federation about anomalies in Earth's magnetic field. The report is buried and forgotten.
After a tremendous victory over the Tungans, the Federation settles into what it expects to be a long period of postwar peace and prosperity.
Kasparas Maille dies in office. In the ensuing special election, Gaios Conlaoch narrowly defeats Kasparas' son, Asamunder Maille. Gaios Conlaoch, an open member of the Peerage, is considered by some to be the return of the old order.
An seismic political crisis sets off when Earth loses its magnetosphere, becoming a Sputterworld. The rest of the Federation wonders if Earth can truly still be the capitol. Nobody can imagine this would lead to civil war.
Earth's magnetosphere weakens suddenly, to the point where electronic devices no longer function on the planet. Earth is downgraded to a sputterworld. Riots engulf the surface.
Suffering unseen since the 21st century occurs on Earth. Millions die as the infrastructure collapses and supply chains are cut. Gaios Conlaoch flees Earth's surface and rules from an orbital facility above the planet. By 2577, a re-establishment of redundant supply chains stabilizes the situation on the surface, though the quality of life of Earth's humans has plummeted.
Gaios Conlaoch is re-elected General Secretary, thanks to strong support from the Sparkworlds. Given Gaios Conlaoch's insane unpopularity on Earth, Earthlings treat this as a bitter betrayal.
The radical Earth Pioneer Party sweeps the Global Central Government's elections, putting them in control of Earth.
The EPP-controlled GCG issues the Terran Dictate: "Earth is the Federation, the Federation is Humanity."
Two factions claim to be the legitimate Federation: the Peerage and the Terran Dictate. Only armed conflict will settle the future of the Federation.
Fearing the issuing of the Terran Dictate by the Earth Central Government, the Intercolonial Senate flees to Avignon. The ECG immediately declares the ICS traitors and demands they return to the planet. The Federation Civil War has begun.
Terran Dictate forces pursue the fleeing senate to Avignon, when they are intercepted by a planetary defense fleet. Conflict ensues in the first battle of the war, and the TD forces are driven off in good order.
The Terran Dictate calls for the entire fleet to rally at Avignon. Every world in the Federation is called to take a side. Many planets devolve into bloody civil wars to determine whose side they will take. Individual fleets are forced to choose between the Peerage and the Terran Dictate. Millions of small conflicts plague the Federation during the bloodiest years in human history. By 2587, the borders between Peerage and Terran Dictate worlds become clear.
The Peerage-aligned worlds hold the Conference of Avignon, to decide what is to be done about the Terran Dictate. Jockeying and politicking ensues, and in the end, Katarina Leocadia is elected Empress of the Imperial Federation.
The Terran Dictate appoints Asamunder Maille as General Secretary of the Federation. A new Intercolonial Senate is formed, made up of those worlds loyal to the Terran Dictate. A new constitution is drafted that heavily favors Sputterworlds in the ICS.
The Intercolonial Senate in Avignon elects Katarina Leocadia as Empress of the Federation. The Avignon Federation officially recognizes titles granted by the Peerage as legal and rightful marks of nobility. Katarina claims descent from Rowan Cyprianus and thus her legitimacy to the new Throne. She promises those who pledge loyalty to her will be well treated.
The Sparkworld Mont Blanc is captured by the Terran Dictate with help from local Sputterworlds. Its citizens are forcibly removed or killed. The planet's computing resources are shared equally among worlds allied to the Terran Dictate.
A coalition of Sputterworlds, disgusted by Asamunder's dictatorship and the open feudalism of the Peerage, declare neutrality as the Fifth Interstellar People's Coalition.
Neighboring vassal worlds of New Sahara betray their liege world. The surface is bombed as Terran Dictate forces land and removed the population as they did with Mont Blanc. News of this event is heavily suppressed among Peerage-controlled worlds.
The Peerage, terrified by what happened at New Sahara, begins a campaign of bribing Sputterworld officials with titles. This action effectively stabilizes the borders of the Peerage.
