Akatari

Sometimes nature can be beautiful. The luminescent and colourful Akatari are a perfect example of this. It is a shame the specimen I encountered saw me as an enemy and tried to blind me.

Akatari are an avian species that is commonly found in rainforests around the world. There is, however, a large population and greater variety of them in the Mizarin Jungle. They are quite beautiful to see, especially during the night as they are luminescent.   Their bioluminescence gives them a magical look and even more so thanks to their beautiful violet colour. One would normally think being so visible makes them an easy target. However, once a predator comes close they can increase the light they give off to such a degree that they blind the would be attacker. In some cases this even results in burns.

Physiology

With their maximum lenght of 40 cm they are not the largest birds but neither are they the smallest. Nonetheless their abilities and colours really make them stand out among the other avian species. Their feather are often a combination of violet and blue and always give off light due to the Akatari's bioluminescence. This is an especially beautiful sight during the night but also during the day they look magical.   Their wings are quite fast and allow them to easily hover in one place. This is especially handy as they tend to use their long beaks to gather nectar from large jungle flowers.

Food

An Akatari eats insects but most of the time they prefer to gather nectar from flowers. The rainforest of the world are therefor a perfect environment for them as they are known to be filled with all kinds of large flowers. Once they have found a flower to their liking they hover in front of it and use their beaks to gather the nectar. Because of their eating habits they act as great pollinators and people living in the rainforest are happy to keep Akatari nearby.   When they hunt for insects they tend to use their light ability to draw them close. Once they are nearby they increase their light to burn them after which the Akatari can easily eat them.

Climate

Most wild Akatari are typically found in rainforest because there is a much larger biodiversity there compared to other regions. As they prefer to eat the nectar of flowers they don't stary far from the rainforests where they are abundant. However, during spring time they are sometimes seen further away from their usual habitats. It is not an uncommon sight to see an Akatari in a more temperate forest that is filled with blossoms.

Reproduction

Like many avian species, the Akatari lays eggs to reproduce. After a female Akatari found a mate they start to build a nest, sometimes with the help of the father. The nest is typically made from smaller branches and is kept together thanks to the saliva of the Akatari which acts as a great binding agent.   On average the female Akatari lays 3 eggs after which the incubation period of 30 days. Once the eggs hatch the mother feeds the children insects for about 34 days after which they children are large enough to start exploring the world on their own.

I really like the hunting method of luring insects in with the light and then burning them to a crisp. That's so clever. I love that they are great pollinators too.

Beautiful. And they essentially cook their own food!
