Neptune Nebula Item in Nine Circles of Saturnia | World Anvil

Neptune Nebula

About to head out towards the Kuiper belt, huh? Well, before ya go, I have this special drink ya might like...
A fancy vodka served at Club Triton. This drink is so fancy it glows by itself! Despite the drink's novelty, it is avoided by the club's regular patrons as this bright beverage harbours a dark secret.   The basic cocktail is a blend of vodka and sweet lemonade. The twist comes in the form something the bar staff call "Nebula Magic", a mixture of two clear liquids that when added together produce a bright blue glow.   It is this blue glow that reveals the sinister nature of the drink. One of the two components of this "Nebula Magic" is an alcohol based solution of anthracene. This acts as a scintilator for the other component, a solution of Radium salts. The decay of Radium and other isotopes in Radium's decay chain releases energetic particles that interact with the anthracene to emit blue light.   Radium, like all alpha emitting isotopes, is extremely dangerous when ingested. Many who imbibe this cocktail succumb to acute radiation poisoning or malignant cancers as the Radium accumulates in the victim's bones.   It is unclear exactly where the nightclub obtains the Radium from., but one of the Vitrification Bunkers on the world of Tertius below is a likely candidate.   Foreigners to the Saturnia system are the preferred targets, especially the Oortzers about to leave for the Outer Reaches.
