The Battle of La Pluma
The Conflict
Prelude
After their loss at the Battle of Rio Vino, the Iconoclast forces had been on forced march. They simply had to reach a friendly port. Then they could sail away, regroup, and make their triumphant return, just as they had done earlier in the war. But it wasn't to be. Ten days out, near the fortress La Pluma de Cuervo, the Royalist Forces caught up with them.
Deployment
Wasting no time, Iconoclast General Fidel Manna forced his way past the understaffed garrison and took control of the fort. He arrayed his archers and what little artillery was left to him on the walls and set to wait. The Inquisidor Mariscal, Horado de Mazzi didn't give him much time to sweat. He surrounded the fortress and immediately made plans to storm it.
Battlefield
The Brazos Islands
Conditions
Sweltering heat. Held the record for hottest day on record for the next seventy years.
The Engagement
It was over before it even began. La Pluma de Cuervo wasn't state of the art to begin with, and the Iconoclasts had little time to fortify. de Mazzi pointed all his cannons at the front gate and blew them apart. His infantry poured in, while archers picked off those that were still sitting on the walls. No one can claim that the Iconoclasts didn't fight bravely, dealing out an impressive number of casualties to the royalists, but the sheer press of bodies crushed them. Some say Manna was the last standing, a hammer clutched in his fist while his other hand held his guts in, all the while screaming about how god would reward him in the after life. His head would be carried back to the capital on a spear.
Outcome
The end of hostilities in the Iglesia War.
Aftermath
Ten years of chaos coming to an end allowed the Brazoso people to recover. The war weary people of the Islands received twenty years of peace, which they used rebuild their merchant fleet and become an economic powerhouse again.
Unexpectedly, the master of La Pluma, a young companero by the name of Taurino de Maslargo, took the embarrassment of having his ancestral home seized twice in as many days, as a challenge to his family dignity. He would lead both his family and the nation in the economic recover, making his house one of the greatest of the greats, until their unexpected downfall two hundred and fifty years later.
