Ilerós

Ilerós is both a gem in The Realm's collection, and one of its largest pain points.    Founded originally by the Atkorian Empire as a temple city, Ilerós is known for its gorgeous architecture and fantastic dome temple once called the Káthisma Tou o Sofós, or "Seat of the Wise." The city was originally conquered by the Carlegnian's, who had issued subduing the populace, and later by The Realm, who have also had issues subduing the populace.   Much of the problems come from both the Carlegnian and Realmer attitudes towards other religions, often crushing their worship. Yet Ilerós has proven resistant to this due to the importance of the site in the worship of The Mantle during the days of the Atkorian Empire. While much of the religious importance of the site has been lost or purposefully destroyed over the generations, the people of Ilerós refuse to completely let go. Religious arrests are common and secret Mantle cults often discovered.   Despite this persecution the city still remains important in The Realm. It is the largest population center in Eastern Efaanu in The Realm, and it contains the Oithear Suíochán; a massive temple built to honor the Elements a few leagues away from the city proper. It is often used as a secondary palace for the ruling Bunusach Cainteior, and a meeting place for the Domhanda Council.   The Káthisma Tou o Sofós now serves as the official seat of power of the Councilor of Sky of the Domhanda Council, as well as the official meeting place of the Tradail, who lead the Culluccat (the primary traders and diplomats of the realm). It has been officially renamed to Tionóláit, though many locals refuse to call it that.

Demographics

Due to its unique circumstances, Ilerós has the highest amount of Olark's found anywhere in Efaanu. Many remain out of religious belief or dedication to their people. This further exacerbates the cultural issues found in the city.

Government

Unlike many cities, the Stuthoir have no say in the governance of Ilerós (in an attempt to appease the locals). Instead the Councilor of Sky is responsible for the major decisions in the city.

Defences

The city maintains a city watch, and a small garrison supplemented with Caemon Haeori. But for the most part, is not all too well defended. The city watch and garrison spend most of their time arresting and suppressing those who practice profane religions.

Industry & Trade

The city farms quite a bit of food from its local region, as well as provides plentiful fishing and hunting in the river, lake, and forest. Much of this food is consumed by the city itself, with surpluses being shipped to local towns and down the river to Bhagreim.

History

Originally founded by the Atkorian Empire as an important temple city, especially with the creation of the Káthisma Tou o Sofós, or "Seat of the Wise," Ilerós was conquered by the Carlegnian's during the expansion period after Frant's death. It was during the Carlegnian rule that suppression of Mantle worship began in order to be replaced by worship of Sulanar. Yet the people resisted, and many Olark refused to flee.   After the fall of the Carlegnian's the city enjoyed a brief respite and ruled itself, only to be later conquered by The Realm, who soon continued the Carlegnian practice of religious suppression with a vengeance. Libraries were burned, records destroyed, idols smashed.   Adding insult to injury, The Realm renamed the primary temple to The Mantle to the Tionóláit and made it a seat of power of one of their Councilors. Then, they built the Oithear Suíochán further down the Ularan River.

Architecture

The city maintains nearly all of its original Atkorian architecture, which was unique and beautiful even by Atkorian Standards. The main exception to this is the Oithear Suíochán outside of the city, which is extremely distinct from the rest of the settlement.

Geography

Ilerós lies one the banks of Anatlikos Lake and at the source point of the Ularan River. Its buildings sit on the banks of both bodies of water, often architecturally merging with them. Around the city lies forests and fields offering plenty of farming opportunity.
