Snowgulch

Ordinarily people would think of Flourim mountain as a terrible place to live near. Waves of rabid dogs known as vermin, flow out from it every day. They attack whatever creatures they can find, and are found hunting in packs dozens of bodies strong. They bite and tear at whatever bits of flesh and bone they can get at. They snarl and claw to find their dinner. They are terrifyingly efficient at what they do. So what could compel a society to put a city next to it?   The answer for behemons is simple, vermin taste wonderful when cooked. For The Drukh Theocracy the supply of vermin is perfect for sustaining a large population in one place because the demand of grub for young behemons is astronomically high.   The city of Snowgulch lies at the base of Flourim mountain surrounded by a twelve foot high wall to keep vermin out. All day and night hunting parties track and kill the ever-present mutts, bringing them back in large wagons to be butchered, grilled, and sent off to children or those going through a recent tether burst. Snowgulch lies as the only place in Drukh where the supply of grub can meet a demand of two million behemons.

Demographics

A vast majority of the population are behemons. The children are able to grow comfortably despite the growth necessity of devouring so much meat thanks to the food sources available. Adults can work within the only bustling and localised craftsmanship guild in all of Drukh, take up the job of hunting vermin, or join any other profession they want. In terms of Leviam there is the Oasis, the largest temple in the country where the Head Leviam herself lives and all others are welcome to pray - so long as they are behemons.   Preposterously, there are a tiny minorities of the population that aren't behemons: Slaves. Rich families may possess a human, sprite, or in exceedingly rare cases an elf as a house-slave to cook and clean, these would be the less physically able labourers. Slaves able to fight are forced to play a role in hunting vermin, after all, it's a business that can never have too few workers. Sometimes the hunting slaves do not lead bad lives provided they do a good job bringing plenteous grub back with them, and so as reward they can be gifted a mangled but passable household within the city.

Government

The city is run by separate guilds all spearheaded by the Leviam clergy: Keeping the stream of in-going grub coming is the Hunting Guild's job, providing arts and happiness is the Craft Guild's job, and the supplying of water around the city is the River Guild's responsibility. If any Gosper or Lerum ever suspects a guild to be performing insufficiently they can report to the Leviam Head who will respond accordingly.

Defences

A twelve foot high wooden wall extends around the city to lower the likelihood of vermin breaking in, the guards regularly patrolling it do the lowering the chance further. The twenty gates into Snowgulch through the wall act as tight checkpoints to monitor the imports of grub and other wares while also doubling as a precaution against any slaves wishing to escape the burg.

Infrastructure

Snowgulch contains the only paved roads in Drukh and they are vital for its continued success as a settlement because the tight scheme of carefully checked wagons cannot be limited by bad hoof-treading. These wagons are precisely timed and instructed on the exact route to take through the city each day. They provide grub, water, commodities and everything one could need. It's an elegant system that requires no one to ever leave their homes to receive the necessities of living.

History

Snowgulch was founded five hundred years ago by the Leviam Head of the time, Perkas Waesan. He made the revolutionary decision to not avoid or hide from vermin, but to instead use them as a food resource. The idea has made the city his achievement above anyone else's, the reason that Drukh managed to raise a metropolis over the decades to follow, something thought impossible for a nation that required so much grub. Since then it has stood as the pinnacle of behemon society, a message to the world that Leviam can flourish. Throughout all the wars fought by Drukh since the city's construction, Snowgulch has never been burnt or bruised by enemy forces.

Architecture

Due to behemons being so large everything is built accordingly. Doorways are three metres high, ceilings four, and floors are made to be study enough to support whales. Most buildings within Snowgulch have a towering stone base of boulders stacked up to support the immense weight of the wooden structure above.  Unsurprising one outcome of the size of behemon homes is that they are never erected more than two floors tall as it becomes extremely dangerous to build so high.

Geography

Snowgulch occupies a mundane valley between Flourim mountain and its neighbours. A river flows down into the centre of the basin from a Great Lake to the east. The chilly climate from the high altitude and the strong rocks beneath the ground not releasing minerals are why the soil is awful for cultivation.
