Spooktober 2024: Ancient

CW: ghost, minor bodily harm
I have left myself
in many places.
Fallen at the base
of Egypt's great pyramid.
The skin
of my scraped knee
an offering
to a long dead Pharoh.
Slipped in the wet grass
at Gettysburg.
Split my lip
on a rock
and watered the ground
with blood
to appease
the restless ghosts.
Slammed by hand
in the door of a museum
in Vilnius.
The split fingernail
dropping to the floor
to be eaten
by the nameless spirits
still looking
for their lost shoes.
My family possibly among them.
Last week
I fell face first
into the concrete slab
in a friend's backyard.
Even broke a tooth.
Kind of makes you wonder
what ancient horrors
slumber there.
