Beeg

Beeg is the largest and northernmost city on the coast of the Rippling River. It is known for its large dam, which has a Mermish community living inside. Beeg is also the largest city in Nideon running primarily off of hydro-electricity and hydro-electric magi-tech.

History

Beeg is one of the oldest Huxoth cities, leading anthropologists to believe that the Huxoth originally branched off of Nefralean society. Though it was clearly founded on the river as a source of water, as more cities grew along the river to the south, it also became a leading trade route among the Huxoth community. Even as the Huxoth people expanded outward into the desert, the river remained an important source of water, as well as wood, which they used for their shagibbing thop.   The connection to the river became a conflict in 1728, when the Nefralean king sought to seize the river for Nefrale's own trade purposes by pushing the Huxoth further into the desert. He sent an army to march on the city, expecting little resistance. But with the help of Mermish forces, the Huxoth successfully defended the city, and negotiated a peace treaty to keep the land within the border of the desert, including that along the Rippling River.

Community in Beeg

Though the land along the Rippling River technically is considered Huxoth land, the community along the river, especially in Beeg, has expanded extensively in the last 200 years. The help of Mermish forces to defend the area has likely contributed to this, as there is also a large Mermish population there, as well as many non-cultural Huxoth who follow the Huxoth religion. Those who are born into the city, whether or not they are born into the Huxoth culture, have an opportunity to join the city's Joyal. As a result, Beeg has the largest and most diverse Joyal in the world.

Beeg Dam

Perhaps what Beeg is best known for today is the dam at its heart. The Beeg dam was built in 1938, as a means of increasing energy to the growing city. There was some conflict regarding the building of the dam, as it would displace people living in the area. This was solved when the Mermish populations were moved to the area as the same time that others were moved out. As a result, the dam was built with an entire Mermish community inside, including the city's largest Mun temple. The largest Huxoth temple, which is dedicated to the gods of water, rather than the gods of wind, is near the edge of the dam. The dam remains controversial because it threatens the effect of the river on the desert, though those who support the dam argue that the water magic produced by the Mermish community makes the dam more efficient.
