Antaran Day of Majority

The Antaran Day of Majority is a national holiday in Antarand celebrating all nineteen year olds, who are considered to have come of age in the past year.   In Antarand, the legal age of majority is nineteen, and the Day of Majority, held on the 21st day of the month of Vakarion, is a way for everyone who has come of age in the past year to celebrate their first steps into adulthood. Those who are still in school or employed are generally given the day off to celebrate. On this day, it is common for young people to dress up, wearing their finest clothes and shoes, and most cities have a ceremony at a significant central location, such as a town square or a city hall, in which the mayor or someone else of import will speak to the young people about their rights and responsibilities as adults. They are then usually announced officially as adults and presented with gifts. To be announced, however, young people have to register to participate in the event. Some larger cities have multiple ceremonies in different locations, to better accommodate the number of young people celebrating. Furthermore, some temples will have their own ceremonies to honor those who attend, as well as any others who wish to celebrate on the day. Unlike city ceremonies, temple ceremonies do not require registration and are often purposely staggered to allow young people to attend more than one.   After the ceremony, young people often exchange gifts with one another and spend the day in the city, enjoying themselves. They may go shopping, eat at a nice restaurant, take a boat tour, or visit a bathhouse. Many businesses offer discounts and special offers for young people who are celebrating their adulthood on this day. At the end of the day, most young people have a large gathering with family, friends, and/or their temple community. This often includes special foods, speeches, and further gifts. Because the Age of Majority is such a grand celebration, most young people do not have a large celebration on their actual nineteenth birthday, waiting instead to be officially announced as adults during the national celebration.
