Alajan Marriage

While Alajan weddings were once grand affairs to which an entire temple community, or in some cases, an entire town, were invited, they have been reduced in the last century, to small, personal affairs. This began with the weddings of people who do not adhere to the Danos faith. Because Danos is a state religion, and practice of other religions is illegal in most provinces, people following other religions would often hold a small ceremony in their home, either registering for a civil marriage later, or following it with a Danos wedding of slightly bigger size in order to save face. In some cases, couples would marry according to their religion of choice, but never follow-up with a legally binding ceremony, though this was less common, as two people living together unmarried might be talked about, especially if they were not seen at the Danos temple.   In those provinces which still practice religious freedom, marriages may be held at the temple, but still remain small affairs because as a whole, the question of religion has become divisive in Alaj, and many people follow a "don't ask, don't tell" policy regarding the subject of faith. These weddings are usually attended by a member of the Danos clergy to handle the legal side of things, but these clergy tend to be supportive of non-Danos weddings, and do not, themselves, add to the religious tension of the matter.   In other provinces, even those who follow the Danos religion have small weddings in their homes, with no more than twenty people in attendance. Even in these provinces, and sometimes more so, aligning yourself with the wrong family can be dangerous, and so people have developed a policy in marriage, similar to in religion, of open secrecy. Divorce is very rare.
