Brackern lore under Hamelin

In ancient times, before the species that inhabit the world now had developed, South Autumnia was closely linked to the elemental plane of earth which formed the basis for the ore rich region that it is today. A race of sophisticated earth elementals, called the brackern, emerged onto Autumnia. Each brackern fused with a floatstone, native to the primaterial plane; which bound them to the plane. When a brackern could not sustain their elemental forms any longer, their conscience would hibernate in the stone. Other brackern would gather around their hibernating bretheren to bury them for safe keeping until a new brackern could fuse with it and regain the knowledge of it's ancestor in an arduous process deep below the ground. Brackern who could not find what they called namestones would live short lives or stay in the elemental plane of earth whereby they would leave the primaterial civilization for good.

Over time the rift between the planes was buried below eons of rock and the lively creatures we know today coexisted with the ancient brackern. As the leylines were torn from the earth below everyone's feet after the wizard wars, the planar rifts closed, or shifted, leaving the brackern stranded on Autumnia without any kin to come and take their place. Fearing that their lineage would be completely whiped out in the conflict, the brackern hid as far down as they could in hibernation, occassionally calling out for their kin from another rift.

As the years passed, no brackern came but the people of Autumnia learned to mine out the abundant ores. They dug deeper and deeper in search of even more riches until one day when an earth genasi could feel the brackerns' call and started unearthing their unique gems. Extensive experiments on the gemstones made it clear that they could be used in a variety of applications, both magical and mechanical, as power sources. This seems to be due to the fusing capabilities and memory storing because they are tuned to absorb manna from the leylines.

Our research group were fascinated with the wide use case of such a battery and believed there was a way to recreate them. Magiarcheological research was conducted and unearthed all information laid out in this document. We are in opposition of the continued exploitation of the brackern due to how immoral the use of these natural gems may be. Though as the earth genasi family holds a monopoly on this trade they are reluctant to the introduction of an alternative technology and if they figure out our intentions they are within their right to cut all ties and effectively hamper our progress.

In the Future, a new rift to the elemental plane of earth will open at the highest peak of the world when it touches the ley lines. Brackern will spew forth to find their kin. Only Ioun truly knows what may happen if they find out what we've done. Using up but a single of these gems may be equivalent to burning down a library in terms of the knowlege lost to the brackern.
