Ailurus

Amongst the tree tops you may catch glimpses of red and black silhouettes eating or sleeping. These fluffy creatures, known as Ailuridae, have been intriguing to older races. Felines accepted them into their kin, others hunted them; in the end they were everyone's friend.

Thick Fur in the Dense Jungle.

Once upon a time on the east side of the Bayous, the Ailuridae emerged from the jungles. They spread on their own to the forests and civilizations of the Summerlands, though they prefer to live high up in the tree crowns where they are free from most predators and have plenty of fruit to feast on.   Due to the high amount of precipitation in their native jungles, their fur had time to absorb high amounts of mana as it rained down. The mana enabled their fur to grow fluffier without making it harder for Ailuridae to live in the warm heat due to their thick coats.

So Fluffy!

Ailuridae are characterized by their short stature and fur. Their backs are coated in orange fur while the fur on their stomachs and limbs are black. The orange fur extends onto their tails which may have tips of black or white as the tail can have different horizontal striped patterns. Orange fur also appears on their face with white around their cheeks, snout, ears, and orange eyes.   5 digits adorn both hands and feet which are well adapted for climbing due to their curved claws and thumbs. Walking on all 4s and standing up are both natural for an Ailurus as their fluffy tail serves to balance their upright body, both being the same length as eachother.

Cats? Bears? Pandas?

Most Ailuridae follow the Cat Lord despite not being cats. This is due to a long history of having been treated as a feline. They were called catbears though their roots are separate from that of the feline races. The name catbear originated from the Benekoer who were the first to inform non-native races of the Ailuridae. When Ailuridae began to integrate themselves into society the name stuck around. Under the years as catbears the god of felines took them in as one of their own and related traditions have stuck around (only that they're generally observed arboreally). It was only when they banded together and carved their own identity as a race that Ailuridae replaced catbears.   Long ago before the Ailuridae knew how to speak, more civilized races, such as elves, hunted them for their prestigious fur. Some fanatic groups of Ailuridae, that follow the god of justice, Ephara, believe that the hunters’ races have not paid for these ancient transgressions. Populations of Ailuridae that established themselves after elves took them to Eldar-Bar were named red pandas after their affinity for bamboo, like the native pandas.

Intimidating Cuteness.

Ailuridae are relaxed, playful, and friendly creatures. When startled, Ailuridae stretch high into the clouds and stretch out their claws to intimidate any predators; this adorable fearsome display is also used to initiate a playsession with their mates, after which they pounce on their mate and wrestle.   When they've finished fighting Ailuridae may like to rest as most of their days are spent sleeping, especially when they live in colder climates. The Ailuridae of Eldar-Bar dine mostly on bamboo, which is not energy rich, so they may be asleep for upwards of 16 hours a day to conserve energy.
