Lake Sheog

Once upon a time...

A tiny lake north of the great castle of Camelot sat at the edge of a wood. The water acted as a gateway for Fae of the Seelie Court, and as a home for a Sidhe, the Lady of the Lake as she guarded the gate and protected one of the Four Treasures of the Tuatha De Danann, Excalibur.

One day, the foolish sidhe, Nimue, fell in love with a Half-Mortal man. And everything fell apart.

Lake Sheog is a small, unremarkable lake in Wales, barely more than a pond. It is known for being beautiful but without any noticable markers. Thus most mortals don't know how special the lake is. For it was a strong connection to the fae, holding one of the anchors as home to the great sword, Excalibur, and to the guardian fae of the lake, Nimue, the Lady of the Lake.

While Nimue did her duty in giving the sword to the mortal, Merlin, to pass on to the rightful king, Arthur, she failed in guiding (or manipulating) the mortal court as the Seelie wished. She broke the rules of her position and lost her title. The new Lady of the Lake, Vivienne, took her place and Nimue had to leave the lake that was her home.

To this day, no mortal knows for certain which small lake is Lake Sheog, and no fae who remains in contact with the mortal realm will say. What is known is that Vivienne does not live in the lake any longer, and the waters will not give passage to the Fae Lands.

Still, if you can find the lake and swim in its crystalline waters, it is said you can summon any fae creature, visit the Goblin Market, and maybe even cross into the Fae Lands proper.
