Myrmex

Myrmex are earth elementals that resemble giant ants made of stone and dirt, often with grass, weeds, and twigs growing out of their backs. They are among the friendliest of elementals, being curious and social creatures that love to meet new people and learn new things. Their colonies are open to all (so long as a visitor doesn't harm them or any of their other guests), making them a safe haven for travelers wherever their colonies are found.   Rather than being ruled by a queen like normal ants, myrmex live as equals until the colony grows large enough to elect a Speaker. The Speaker is generally the oldest myrmex, who typically started the colony in the first place, and is in charge of communicating with non-myrmex creatures on behalf of the colony. In times of crisis, they also act as leader to organize the colony's response.   As earth elementals, myrmex do not lay eggs like normal ants. Instead, adult myrmex will sculpt dirt, stone, and earth around a gemstone and bestow life upon it with their magic. This often puts them into conflict with another type of earth elemental, the xorn, who often wish to eat the gems that the myrmex rely on for reproduction.   While myrmex will make fast friends with virtually anyone, they rarely swear fealty to others. This is much to the ire of elemental lords who believe all "lesser" elementals should obey their commands, though those who befriend the myrmex will find that the ageless elementals loyalty can last generations.
