Leh'ct's Letter to Matron Mother Yrsi

Leh'ct Arlathil wrote this letter to Matron Mother Ysri Vaerixas after a rough conversation with her and before setting out on his next adventure.   Honored Matron Mother Ysri of House Vaerixas,   Thank you for all you have done for me. I know your time and your wisdom are precious, and you’ve shared both generously with an orphan boy not of your family or even your city. I am really thankful for the introduction to Eilistraee, and the warning about the hold her mother has over our kind if we do not turn to Eilistraee to lose it. And for the talisman bearing her symbol, and the way to use it to turn to her for her protection.   Learning of my family name was an enormous boon, as well. I will continue exploring that heritage. The knowledge about briar vines is something I have been able to work with. I hope to one day learn still more, and you have given me some directions to look. So again, I thank you.   I am sorry that I disappoint you over Silinrul. I can no more abandon him than you could leave me to the Bitch Queen’s clutches. I appreciate the three weeks you’ve given me to find a solution before you do whatever you’re going to do. I understand if it means you’ll never want to see me again. But I do have news on that! Two solutions, one less effective but more immediate than the other.   Villamax has created an amulet based on the powers of faerzress that should muddy her ability to pick the wearer out amongst all of the spiders of the world, though it may not perfectly block the powers of a goddess. The next time I see Silinrul, I will give it to him and help him attune it. I won’t bring him to Deep Spire, don’t worry. But if we do not meet again, I want you to know that at least I am taking your concerns seriously.   But that isn’t the best solution. I have learned of a sort of god called an ‘Animal Lord,’ and that when the Bitch Queen descended into the Demonweb Pits, she stole the influence over spiders from one called “Mother Moth.” I believe that, if I can get Silinrul to her, she may be able to reclaim the rights over at least that particular spider from the thief-goddess. Maybe there might even be some way I could help her regain the mantle in full, because the Bitch Queen doesn’t deserve spiders.   I write you this in this letter in case I don’t see you again. Adventuring is dangerous, and we’re going out for one. I know you’re busy, so I hope this finds you well when you do have time. I wanted you to know, just in case for any reason I was unable to return to Deep Spire, or you didn’t have time for me, or I wasn’t welcome back.   I also have included a mantilla that I wove for you from some of the things we’ve found on our adventures on the Black Loch. It’s the best I can think of to thank you for the holy symbol and all the advice and time you’ve given me.   One of the things I learned recently is that magical spells of water breathing work well to let you survive under water, but they don’t permit spellcasting. Even if you’re breathing it, you can’t speak with water in your lungs! I have developed a spell that works better for that purpose, and this mantilla has that magic incorporated in it. If you wear it underwater, it will produce a bubble of air around your head, which will let you breathe and speak normally. I don’t know if you’ll ever find it useful, but I hope you like it, either way.   Thank you again for everything. I expect we’ll be back before the day is out, but it might be a day or two, depending on what happens out there on the Loch. If I don’t see you again for any reason, though, I just wanted to make sure you got the mantilla.   Sincerely, Leh'ct Arlathil
