Eilistraee, the Dark Dancer

Eilistraee, the Dark Dancer, is the sole good deity among those worshipped by the drow. She is the daughter of Corellon Larethian, Elven God of Magic, and the elven goddess Araushnee, who later became Lolth, the Spider Queen. When her mother was banished for betraying her father in ancient times, Eilistraee willingly followed Lolth into exile in hopes of keeping the dark elves (who would later become the drow) safe from the corrupting influence of Lolth and the other banished deities. Eilistraee's efforts are a constant uphill battle as she seeks to bring her people back to the light of the surface world, despite opposition from her mother and the other drow deities.   Regardless of her many hardships and setbacks, Eilistraee has never stopped fighting for her people. This sad history has left a strong sense of melancholy in Eilistraee's heart, but it was this very feeling that taught her to search for beauty even in the darkest of places. She found happiness in the arts; in music and dance especially, but also in seeing others perform such feats. Eilistraee takes great pleasure in helping her people and has a particular soft spot for outcasts, seeing something of herself in such souls. It is said that a blessing from Eilistraee often manifests as a burst of creativity or inspiration, particularly where the arts are concerned.   Eilistraee is very close to her followers, much more so than most other deities. In part, this is due to the relatively small number of drow that worship her and the fact that such individuals require protection to avoid discovery by Lolth. She keeps close eye on those who ask for her aid, listening to nearly every prayer directly and personally guiding their souls to the afterlife at their time of death. It is by their actions that Eilistraee judges mortals who came under her gaze; for she knows that it is a person's intentions, rather than the outcomes of their actions, that truly define a person's character. It is her hope that one day all can make such judgments and that all who have fallen to evil, particularly the many drow caught in the web of Lolth's influence, will one day be redeemed.
