Something is Rotten in the City-State of Dennmarsh

General Summary

Introduction

T   he party heard about the a terrible odor that has forced the denizens of the once boisterous city-state of Dennmarsh to stay indoors lest they become overwhelmed by the smell and become deathly sick. While traveling through the region they decided to try their luck selling their services to the city council.   "Welcome brave adventurers! Thank you for coming. I apologize for the lack of a proper welcome, but these are trying times. As you are most certainly aware, a terrible odor has permeated the city. So much so, that the water itself has turned to filth. The worst affected part of the city is Vale Garden, a place some of us ourselves call home. We believe something has happened there to cause this, though our own investigations have turned up nothing. In exchange for your services in ridding the city of this foul curse, we can offer you 100 gold pieces."   ”Hello Council, I'm fairly new to this land so I'm kind of at a loss for what all is in the Vale Garden. What variety of structures and establishments reside there. Additionally, how long has it been like this?” spoke the eladrin lieutenant, Drallengray.   The cleric, Father Harold he calls himself, followed up with another question. "What can you tell us about Vale Garden. I shall help you cleanse this wickedness."   The water genasi, Agate, was quick to clarify the council's words. "100 gold pieces, eh? To split, or each? Do you recommend any kind of face shield or air freshener to dangle around the neck for stench relief? In any case, I love destroying filth! I'm in!"   To which the council responded, "The offer of 100 Gold is exceptionally generous as far as we're concerned. The vale garden is a neighborhood, there are all sorts of buildings but that is where we have determined the smell is primarily coming from."   ”I've never seen something smell so bad outside of water to contaminate the water, so I think that may be our best bet moving forward. Being somewhat of a residential district, the Vale Garden likely has water features. Do you have a Map of the area we could use for this venture so we may narrow this trek down?” The party was not letting the council get off easy.   "We shall have the guards escort you to the neighborhood, they will be able to point you in the correct direction." was their response.   Sar'roc has, so far, been standing quietly at the back of the room but now steps forward. "Excuse me, my Lords and ladies... Vale Garden sounds like a lovely place, current predicaments aside, I wonder if it might be wise.. to... provide us with... some form of writ or identification of authority to investigate the area. I am sure it would be invaluable in... persuading... the populace to answer our questions and secure access to buildings... would that be possible?"   Osric falls in aside Sar'roc. A human of medium stature, he wears a coat of mail that has seen better days. His offhand resting idly around the hilt of his blade, his other hand's thumb tucked into his belt. He looks around the chamber. Seeing what races reside on the current council of Dennmarsh.   The council is a diverse selection of the more populous races of the region, there looks to be a pair of humans, someone you believe may be a half-elf, a dwarf, and a halfling. On your entrance into the city you saw homes that you would assume would be home to gnomes as well, but none sit on the council.   Osric returns his attention to the council member whom Sar'roc was talking to.   Sar'roc stands quietly, waiting patiently. He is a thin-faced, serious looking high elf; he wears black leather armor and has a whip coiled at his waist.   The council deliberates for a moment in hushed tones before presenting the group with pins fashioned in the shape of a swallow along with a hastily written note which denotes you as adventurers on the mission at the request of the council.   After meeting back up with the group after they all collect their badges, Drallengray chimes in with his theory, ”Ok, now hear me out. If something stinks, even if it stinks really bad; it needs to be IN the water for the water to go sour. I suggest we look to the waterways first. What do you all think?”   Osric nods along with Drallengray as they follow the guards out of the chamber "Sounds like a fair enough notion. Canvassing the vales' wells, bath houses and sewers I reckon might put us on the right direction to sort this mess out."   "Names Osric by the way. I can tell by ye' stride you're a soldier too. Perhaps even an officer? Glad to have another fighting man beside me on this job." He gives the lieutenant an affirming nod.     Last Message
