Chaepstow Settlement in New World - Dragonsmoke Archipelago | World Anvil

Chaepstow

T   he trees suddenly give way to a happy little farming community. A murky green river splits the the settlement with the southern half housing most of the dwellings. The north side of the river contains some of the larger communal buildings, a stone barracks, and rice fields beyond that. There are two bridges that cross the slow river (its current is almost imperceptible). The southern bridge is dainty, slender, and beautifully crafted, not wide enough for three people to walk abreast. It leads to a small village green where special events and gatherings are likely to take place. The northern bridge is much more functional, as it's large and sturdy enough for carts and heavy cattle.   The climate is hot and humid; summers here are particularly unbearable. Winter, the only other season Chaepstins experience, is only slightly more agreeable. Chaepstins are hardworking folk with dark, sun-kissed skin. The rice fields to the north and the canals dug from the river must have taken generations to dig and clear.   Had the weather been the settlers only weight to bear, this place might not have seemed quite so bad. The clouds of buzzing mosquitos and other pesky, miserable insects only made the hot climate that much more uncomfortable.
