The Laveau Family
The Laveau's are a famous family in New Orleans of Voodoo practitioners. The practice of voodoo for the Laveau's started in the early 1800 with Marie Laveau, called the Voodoo Queen by many. She studied under Doctor John Bayou, a Gris Gris man and prominent voodoo priest. She quickly learned the craft and became very popular, It was said that she has even surpassed Doctor John, though in truth it was probably just her popularity that accounts for the rumors, as Doctor John was one of the most powerful Voodoo practitioners to have ever lived.
Several of her children learned the craft from Marie, and like her, they all had a strong gift, especially her daughter, also named Marie. Marie II actually combined some Native American Practices into her craft and was said to be as powerful as her mother., if not as well known.
Today the family is known for celebrating their heritage and connection to their past but most of the family have no interest in learning real voodoo magic. There are some exceptions, Marguerite Laveau the great great granddaughter of Marie Laveau, is a practitioner, learning the craft her mother, who learned it from her grandmother, daughter or Marie. She along with two of her cousins have created the [Laveau Academy](organization:42724051-bb12-4d8e-a735-6936d2a74e04). It is a school where students can come to learn voodoo practices.
Most people that attend have no talent at all and get a year of instruction in herbal remedies, history, and voodoo culture. Some however have real talent and are asked to join the inner circle of the academy. All members are considered part of the Laveau family even if they have no blood relations to Marie.
The family mostly lives off the reputation of Marie Laveau. Even Marguerite is weak compared to the great voodooist of old. However, recently one of the new students has shown incredible talent and is said to be the reincarnation of Marie Laveau herself. While she is still new to the craft, she has the most potential anyone has seen in years. Playing a Laveau Whether you have any blood relation to the Laveau family, character who want to play a Laveau will be members of the Laveau Academy.
Laveau Voodoo Practitioners study Sympathy, Herbology, and Spirit Magic. Like most Voodoo Practitioners, the specialize in conversing with the spirits of the dead. Laveau Voodooists do not like to call upon the Lao. Marie herself knew how dangerous it was to call upon such powers and only called upon them in rare circumstances.
