Fairy Trapper

The hunters of wild undynes, nymphs, Moungs, and other Hekkauthra are called Hekkauterers and are typically venerated in society. Yet the vast majority of "forest maintenence" is done by devising and setting traps for dangerous Hekkauthra, a profession equal in peril to hunting but with a fraction of the fame.

A Master Profession

Though the first trappers arose as a poor man's alternative to ridding their towns of pestering Hekkauthra, they quickly became a valued profession. They take a greater risk by venturing into the wilderness for weeks at a time to set traps and seek out the dens of their prey. In 660, there was at least two trappers in every large town in the Mindreland with more in parts of Nilofaur and Canterlund. Yet the profession remained a gruesome one and its practitioners shared the outskirts of town along with the tanners.   In the 1020s, sorcerers were seeking ways to more efficiently trap their Hekkauthran prey and began to rely upon these trappers. It is from this trade that the term Fairy Trapper originated for this was the creature sorcerers most often sought. By 1100, Fairy Trappers became synonymous with sorcerers of note. Some especially powerful sorcerers appointed teams of trappers as many as twenty strong. Indeed, some of the great experiments of sorcery, achieved through the contribution of hundreds of Hekkauthra, must have had the backing of a great many trappers.

The Wild Dangers of the Woods

Wild Hekkauthra choke the forests and jungles across the continent. While they typically keep their distance from Human settlements, they can be nuisance and occasionally a great danger. In the case of an odd Moung or single threat, a Hekkauterer may be hired from the next town over to dispatch of the threat.   More often though, a group of Hekkauthra are to blame for a villages trampled crops, stolen food, and contaminated wells. The villagers, too poor to afford hiring someone for such a big job, learned to trap and kill the creatures themselves. Thus the first trappers of Hekkauthra were born, a profession which became recognized by the term, Fairy Trapper.
