The Modern Utopia Society

“Not until the creation and maintenance of decent conditions of life for all people are recognized and accepted as a common obligation of all people and all countries - not until then shall we, with a certain degree of justification, be able to speak of humankind as civilized.”
— Albert Einstein, The World As I See It
The Modern Utopia Society is an organization of scifi authors and economic/political theorists that dedicated to the design and implementation of different forms of government. The organization envisions Utopia as an unreachable goal, a perfect society being impossible, that serves to inspire systems of government and culture that are ever more equitable, stable, righteous, happy, and prosperous. Members of the Society have been involved in a wide range of political movements, from the Stellar Monarchist League to the charter of the Republic of Deseret. Members are not required to agree on a single vision of what Utopia IS, rather they must simply believe in the concept of Utopia as an admirable goal. The Society began as a science fiction club, examining the various cultures and political systems presented in speculative fiction. By the time of the The Second Enlightenment, speculative science fiction was centuries old, giving Society members a plethora of sources to examine and compare.  What sets the Society apart from similar organizations is their commitment to putting down on paper actual blueprints for different governments, rather than forever debating the theory of Utopia.
“The point of creating futures is to get people to imagine what they want and don’t want to happen down the road – and maybe do something about it.”
— Marge Piercy, Woman on the Edge of Time
