The Frisian shamans are the guardians of the last but of scientific knowledge on their planet. Many of their "magical items" are in fact just bits and pieces of technology that the original colonists brought with them. But the knowledge to use, interface with, and repair these items is dying. Legacy software refers to the computer programs and coding language used in equipment brought with colonists as they settled the stars. Among the most consistent problems colonists faces was how to manufacture new hardware for their software, and how to train their children in their use. For colonists used to software integration for every conceivable gadget the switch to analog was an unexpected difficulty. Without additional colonists from Sol bringing in new ideas, it was common a colony's technological level to deteriorate over time.
Chief: What do you the tractor is broken? None of the parts have a problem!
Worker: None of the physical ones, sure.
Chief: What the hell does that mean?!
Worker: It's the software chief, the last handheld broke last month and now we have nothing to run a diagnostic with.
Chief: Can't you do the diagnostic yourself?
Worker: I'm sorry chief, I can't. I only know how to do it with the interface on the handheld, otherwise it's just me staring at wires.
