Desereti Mayor

For many Deseretis the political office that most consistently and directly affects their lives is that of Mayor. These mayors were the most important decision makers during the early years of colonial development, and retain special power and authority that make them them a force to be reckoned with to this day.

History

For many of the early years of Deseret's history there was no need for a president or a layered government. For the first twenty years the only settlements were Zarahemla and its satellite settlements. In those days there were more research stations than actual cities. The Desereti Colonial Expedition knew that this would be the case and prepared for it, planning a government that would grow in stages, eventually resulting in the Federal Government that people know of today.   From the very first day on planet the office of mayor was the highest form of meaningful government. While the Desereti Colonial Leadership corp administered the colony on a system wide level, the lives of most people centered around the first city on Deseret, Zarahemla under the leadership insert mayor name here. Mayor Ulrik Dahlem was elected by the Desereti Colonial Leadership before leaving Earth, bringing with them a crack team of government bureaucrats.

Duties

The mayor was responsible for overseeing the construction of the city, administering the town, and reported directly to colonial leadership. While the DCL retained veto power, in many cases Mayor Ulrik Dahlem was allowed to handle situations on their own. Over time more and more power would be handed to the Mayor as the DCL transitioned more of its power to new elected layers of government.   Present Day Despite 200 years of unimpeded population growth there are only around 4 million Deseretis, having started at 40,000 colonists.  As their population has increased Deseretis have expanded into nearby provinces, establishing one city per province.  Because there is currently only one city per province there is no need for a provincial governor, the duties and responsibilities of that position being handled by Mayors instead.

Your Honor
We have read of the great city states of old, Athens, Sparta, Jerusalem, and Abu Dhabi. Now we write about their modern equivalents, Zarahemla, Ocean Forest, Taumata, Rivendall, and many more. May their glory and righteousness never fade.
