W.A.R.D

As Magic started influencing society more and more, concerns were raised over regulation. Many people were aware of how dangerous magic could be, but as Nu Magic began to become more commonplace within society, a regulatory solution became necessary and the Libertalian government created the Bureau of "Wands, Alchemy, Rituals, Daemons", Colloquially known as the WARD. Initially the Bureau was responsible only for creating regulations and standards regarding magical spells and items but over the next 20 years expanded to include investigation of all extraplanar entities, training agents in counter-magic warfare, and developing magic-anathema technologies.   WARD is a divisive agency to say the least. Proponents and supporters quote the regulation laws put forth by the Bureau creating a strong standard of quality for magical goods as well as their efforts in monitoring and closing extraplanar gateways to prevent otherworldly beings from meddling with mortals. Detractors on the other hand are concerned about the growing influence of the organization as well as the organization seemingly becoming more and more militarized. The Bureau has also been accused of having an anti-magic agenda, advocating for heavier sentences against magicians whether or not their crimes involved any sort of magic and limiting the ease of access to magic reagents and proper foci. Rumors have also circulated that WARD has a number of outsiders detained in a special facility, with a roster of detainees including Fae, Daemons, Mechanoids, and even an Angel.   The Lord Keeper of WARD is Kharydon Shield, a man of human and elven descent who was the head of WARD' predecessor "Magic Detection Division" (Back when the nation was still Magic-Averse) before it was absorbed into the new Bureau. In the organization's short history, he's credited for the organization's success for his leadership and organizational skills that allows the bureau to operate on the national capacity that it does. He's also gone on record saying that he does not trust Nu Magic, calling it quote, "The road leading to disaster that everyone seems to be all too eager to travel down." Shield's critics often call him paranoid and question whether or not he's the right choice for WARDS. Some even wonder if he's ever prepared the organization to succeed him or if WARD is just an extension of himself that will collapse when he eventually does.

Structure

WARD is broken up into four different branches.
  • The Keepers of Wands specialize in magic items. They create the standards on how they’re made, what magic items are prohibited, and the sales tax for each category.
  • The Keepers of Alchemists are similar to the wand keepers but for potions and other alchemical creations.  They also work closely with anti-drug agencies regarding magic-drug related crimes.
  • The Keepers of Rituals deals with spellcasting, regulating how magic is allowed to be used and what schools are restricted.  They are also in charge of auditing arcane universities to ensure the highest standards of magical practices are being taught.
  • The Keepers of Daemons are responsible for investigating "Daemons" (the legal definition for "any extraplanar entity") and individuals who make pacts with them, officially known as Warlocks.

Public Agenda

WARD's mission statement is to ensure that magic can be used by the masses in a safe and efficient manner.

Assets

The Bureau have an annual budget of around four billion, and several hundred offices around the country.  Wardens can ask for assistance from law enforcement up to even commanding swat teams.  But even without law enforcement, every Warden team has weapons their own weapons and also have counter magic tech, weapons, and training specifically for fighting magicians.
