The Shelter Building / Landmark in Neria | World Anvil

The Shelter

Founded on the site of an abandoned church, the Shelter is unassuming from the outside. The old groundskeeper who takes care of the ancient site is careful to lock the doors behind her when entering and leaving. Sometimes kids go in there, probably messing about to the average person.   Those kids are Magi. Supernaturally gifted people with a terrible curse, seeking shelter from the woman within. This isn't any old church, you see -- the people who built it were smart to ward it from all harm. Magi's powers don't work here, so neither does their curse. It's safe. It's home.

Purpose / Function

The Shelter is a home for young Magi who find themselves lost or outcast. The groundskeeper, Evelyn, utilises the building (which was once a place of religious gathering) to counsel, care for and occasionally house young Magi.   Long ago this was a place of worship, of a God who healed the world of blight. While some believe that to be Magi -- especially given the magic-neutralising power of the God's holy ground -- others believe it to be the sickness that comes with it. One thing is for sure: it's safe now for Magi of all kinds.

Alterations

Though the outside is largely unchanged, many walls and floors have been added to change the building from a church to a homeless shelter, and now a shelter for Magi.

Architecture

The Shelter is a tall, brick building -- otherwise unassuming. Old red brick frame large wooden double doors at the top of a set of stone steps, and many plants have grown on and around it over the years. Large glass windows are stained and shadowed with age, barely translucent.   It's obvious where the more modern walls have been added to the interior. If not for the large entrance hall, stone features and curious wooden beams, it would be impossible to tell this was ever a church. Glass panels, modern doors and carpeted stairwells are just a few of the new additions to the building.
