Broken Mast

Firmly planted a dozen or so feet on the shore in the quiet seaside town of Tarr's Run, sits an old schooner. The name has been long washed away by the salt spray and mist that frequents the shores of the Clearshard Ocean. Some say it was the Lonely Mermaid, a trading ship from the west that ran aground after a summer storm. Others say it's true name is the simply The Howl and was once a pirate ship that was scuttled to avoid seizure of the treasure on board. No matter what the true purpose of this ship was, it is now a staple of this hamlet and goes by the name of The Broken Mast, an allusion to it's signature lack of a main mast. The sails have long since torn in the southern winds, the rigging rotted, leaving the husk of a great boat in its wake.   Upon entry to the tavern, the first thing one notices is the compactness. The lower deck of the ship has been made into the barroom, while the upper deck has turned into the lodging. The boards have been replaced as they rot, giving the room a patchwork quality. Lanterns make shadows dance across the walls at night, giving the appearance of more patrons than normal. The fishermen of the town are often seen throwing back ales at the end of the day, dragging the briny air with them, as well as whatever the catch of the day was. Traveling musicians occasionally make their way through Tarr's Run, but mostly the entertainment is provided by local children or women looking to escape the monotony of the work day with a little song or dance.   Running the establishment is Reggie, a slow but kind green skinned half orc. His slow demeanor gives the appearance of one past his prime, but he is quick to act with a cutlass or hand crossbow of anyone gets rowdy. No one knows what his story is, but there are enough rumors that keep the locals in check. The other denizen of note is Finnigan Black, who embraces his moniker of "The Town Drunk". As a loud, older dwarf, he is always good for a drunken sea shanty, a poorly timed joke, or a story that may or may not be true about his days out on the open seas.

As it is a wrecked ship, i had the question, Is it a dozen feet out to sea, or a dozen feet above the tide? or perhaps it's entrance is dry sometimes and wet at others depending on the height of the tide?   I like the idea of a wrecked ship being used as a tavern. How is it maintained? Do they occasionally replace a plank at a time if they start to rot?

Feel free to stop by some of my WorldEmber articles if you want. My favorites are The Book of the Unquiet Dead, Outpost of the Moons, and The Emerald Hills. Feedback is always appreciated.

Thanks for the feedback. I will change things up, but basically it was deposited on the shore by a big wave and is dry all the time. As for its maintenance, the board are replaced as they rot, giving the inside a patchwork appearance.
