Yherong
Yherong is an independent city-state centered around the Temple of Yher, where the deity of prophesies resides.
Demographics
Being a center of international attention, Yherong attracts people of all nationalities, though it has more members of ancestries that put more stake in magic, such as elves.
Government
Yherong is ruled by a collective council of the city's wealthy merchants, and gets its income mostly by taxing entrance to the city. The government relies heavily on Yher's prophecies for issues of policy, foreign relations, and trade, which has often been criticized.
Defences
Yherong doesn't maintain a professional guard, despite its size. Instead, most of the citizens are required to perform guard duty occasionally, and the wealthy merchants have small mercenary forces they can call upon should the city need it.
Industry & Trade
Despite its inland position, Yherong has a thriving market, as merchants have realized it's a perfect place to bring goods, allowing them to sell them to people of many nations while staying in one place.
Infrastructure
Having so many pilgrims come into Yherong from around the world, the city has remained largely up-to-date with modern technology. It has running water, magical conveniences, firearms, and even a few plasma weapons like those from Cyrdia.
History
Before Yherong came to be, an ancient civilization settled in its future location, along a river whose course long ago diverted. The most impressive structure they left behind was the Temple of Yher. Whether it was built for Yher or they merely found it, the strange deity started to live in the temple, giving their prophecies to any who came to them. As more people heard of this, they journeyed to the temple, and eventually, enough of them stayed for Yherong to be called a city, built upon the ruins of the past.
Points of interest
Aside from the Temple of Yher, the exuberant Central Hall is Yherong's most impressive building. Handling almost all matters of the city's government, including meetings of the Council of Merchants. Standing across the city center from the Temple of Yher, the Central Hall rises high above most of the city.
Tourism
People come to Yherong from all corners of the world, embarking on pilgrimages to receive prophecies from Yher. By necessity, these pilgrims all place stock in predictive magic, and many are superstitious. The city caters to these pilgrims with a large amount of inns, and many merchants take advantage of them by selling them fake luck charms and the like.
