Scout

A scout is a warrior that explores and gathers information for an army.

Career

Qualifications

In order to be a scout, one must be an accomplished fighter, explorer, and survivalist, and have proven their loyalty enough to be trusted with doing the job alone.

Career Progression

There are several types of scout commonly used by the armies of the world. Ranking up requires performing admirably in one's current task.

Forerunners move ahead of a marching army, watching out for ambushes and making sure the way is clear of obstacles. They report to their superiors often.

Outriders perform similar duties to forerunners, but much farther ahead. They are almost always mounted, in order to be able to cross the distance to their army quickly. They also suggest paths forward for the forces, and they report to their superiors less frequently

Explorers Don't stay with any particular group of troops, but rather sneak deep into enemy territory in order to chart the area and assess defenses, before returning to command and presenting what they found. Some also patrol friendly territory in search of hidden enemy forces. These operations are dangerous, and can last months at a time, so only the most skilled are given this role.

Skywatchers, used only by the Wyvern Knights of Upriel, patrol the skies above both friendly and enemy territory. With their high vantage point, they can get a much more accurate assessment of an area than an ordinary explorer, while moving faster. It also makes it easy to spot marching enemy armies that lack the cover of a forest. Because of the skywatchers, making a surprise attack against Upriel is very difficult.

Payment & Reimbursement

If they do their jobs well, scouts are often paid more than double the rate of a normal soldier.

Operations

Tools

Scouts are often skilled in both ranged and melee combat, with bows favored over crossbows or firearms for their quietness. Spyglasses allow a scout to look far in the distance.

Dangers & Hazards

As a scout, the danger of being caught by the enemy is always present, which is why they take care to move stealthily and avoid confrontations, fighting only when cornered.
