Mystery of the Gnomes

The Mystery of the Gnomes refers to the issue of the origin of the Gnome people. No singular mythos or people-group has presented a satisfying solution to the problem, and the question remains a popular area of study at the Royal Academy.

The problem largely stems from the similarities Gnomes have with numerous other species. They have the living habits and craftsmanship of Dwarves, the sense of contentedness of Halflings, love of adventure of Humans, and the natural arcane abilities of Elves. Indeed, their magical prowess points to them having Fey ancestry. However, there is no precedent or record of them having been born of Vorstemor's Fungi (see Origin under Elf), nor do they have the innate ability to find or make Fey Crossroads, a necessary trait of Fey Ancestry.
