Shod Shoveling
Overseen by the Karbonites, shod shovelers are an important people in Hachenberg. They stop the shod building up around the furnaces by dumping it into the Libben.
Shod shovelers are lined up beside the furnace outflow pipes and shovel, into the river, everything that's deposited from them. If they shovel too slowly, they outflow pipe gets blocked and the furnace could become overheated.
Sometimes furnace ghouls are deposited through the outflow pipes, but they're quickly dispatched by the Karbonite soldiers before they can do much more than attack the person shoveling that particular pipe.

The main benefit for working as a shod shoveler, other than the high pay, is that it doesn't have set work days or hours. One can come and go as they please, making it the perfect position for someone who wishes to earn a bit of extra money.

Shod shovelers are given a shovel at the beginning of their shift, though it's taken away again when they leave.
Dangers & Hazards
Sometimes, a furnace ghoul will attack the shod shovelers and do major damage before the Karbonite soldiers can intervene. Not often are hands torn off, faces mauled, or bodies burnt by these creatures.
Shod shoveling is tiring work, and it's commonplace for the people doing it to collapse under the weight of their own exhaustion.
